Another shot from Pemaquid Point Lighthouse park in Bristol, Maine. I suppose the door on this little outbuilding can count for #Doorsday. Regretfully, I can’t remember what this building was used for back in the days before the lighthouse was automated, possible for the storage of lamp oil.

The building is built on the rocks at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and may have been used for storage of lamp oil back in the day though I’m not positive. In the foreground there are slabs of rock with bright yellow lichen growing on them and a gnarled spruce tree in the righthand side of the frame. In the background the rocks descend down to the shoreline of the gulf of Maine and there is a point of land in the distance. The day is hazy; the horizon line is obscured and the sky appears white.

The rocks at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse for #TextureTuesday. I finally had the chance to visit Pemaquid Point in Bristol, Maine the other day when I happened to be in the area. I was really blown away by the fascinating and beautiful geology of the area around the lighthouse.

According to the Maine Geological Survey, the rocks here are mostly metamorphic with some igneous. The gray layered rock is called gneiss and it was originally sediments at the bottom of the ocean that were metamorphosed 360-415 million years ago into what you see here. The light gray/whitish igneous rock is called pegmatite.

A photograph of a geologically-interesting rocky shoreline with a cylindrical white lighthouse and keeper’s house in the background. The rocks are a grayish metamorphic rock called gneiss that is heavily striated due to its origins as a sedimentary rock with many layers. The stripes in the rock run perpendicular to the angle/location the photo was taken from. The rocks are not only banded but also have a slightly wavy or undulating appearance to them. On the right side of the frame there is a band of whitish-gray igneous rock called pegmatite that runs along top a high point in the rock. All of the lines in the rock look like they are running toward the lighthouse.

Standing tall against the infinite cosmos, this lighthouse has been watching over sailors for generations. There’s something deeply moving about these beacons of hope - silent guardians cutting through darkness with their eternal light.

New Dungeness Light Station and Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge today. Located near Sequim, Washington, this image shows several light station structures including the lighthouse and the keeper’s quarters as well as the flag flying between them. The sky today is blue with a hint of clouds. Vegetation and soil of the Dungeness Spit appear in the foreground. The line of deep blue in the background is the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Pt Reyes Lighthouse

There are 308 stairs that lead down to the lighthouse and the lighthouse is 37 feet above sea level. The Point Reyes Lighthouse is the windiest and foggiest on the west coast. The station is often blanketed by weeklong periods of fog.
This particular overlook is also very popular with whale watchers. Spring and fall are the best time to see whales here.

PT Reyes Lighthouse This is an image of the Pt Reyes Lighthouse. This was captured at the point at Point Reyes National Seashore. The lighthouse reaches out into the Pacific Ocean on a small spit of land. There are over 300 steps to get down to the lighthouse. On either side of the steps the land drops off into the ocean as seen on the left side of the image. The lighthouse and supporting structures are white with a red roof. Out past the lighthouse is a bank of thick fog that is rolling in off of the ocean.
