PSA: Mastodon supports uploads up to 40 MB, meaning videos can easily go longer than the 2:20 Twitter forces.

Here's a 3:59 long one - 's bliss jam during Drive on 3/8/23.

In this case, I had a 4 minute H265 clip with a filesize of 63 MB, ran it through Handbrake using the "Social 50 MB 5 Minutes 720p30" preset, which resulted in a 40 MB file. I was able to upload that using the shakedown.social website no problem

@clifff Do any clients do the compression for you? @ivory @paul

@chopaganda @ivory @paul no idea tbh, can imagine a couple ways that may work

@clifff @ivory @paul Assume it’s not done server side? Just thinking about iPhone videos being bigger and bigger bc of better camera specs.

Like if I record a video on my iPhone, what’s the max length?

@chopaganda @ivory @paul There is some server side processing done*, but the 40 MB limit applies before that happens.

Tried uploading a 3:15 video using Ivory on my iPhone and got a 40 MB size limit error which is kind of good. No option to 'export' a different size like you get in the Gmail app when selection photos (no idea if that is an iOS of Gmail feature tbh)

* - "Video will be transcoded to H.264 MP4 with a maximum bitrate of 1300kbps and framerate of 60fps." docs.joinmastodon.org/user/pos

@clifff Hey @Madisonhuvan — you see this? You no longer need to support fascism just to get your best material out if you don’t want to.

@clifff another reason why mastodon is better than twitter
