I must look like a major pain in the ass. The deli counter guys always ask how I want the turkey sliced. My response, “However you wanna slice it.” And then they laugh and realize I’m not as high maintenance as I (must) look. #momlife
@bethbjammin my reply “as thin as possible while maintaining a slice”. And yes, I want to taste/see it.
@Phreba You are the person they believe I am. Ha ha. Out of sheer curiosity, what is so much better about thinly sliced deli meat? I only buy it for my family so I have zero valid opinions. I always assumed people were trying to stretch their budget or make some chipped meat crock pot dish.
@bethbjammin good sandwiches have the meats and cheeses piled up without any real organization. So, should almost look fluffy before you close the sandwich. Impossible to do with a thick slice. Also, it just tastes better(imho). Finally, growing up in a big Italian house in north jersey, thickly sliced meat was what they did in the midwest.(no offense to anyone there, it’s just classic northeast Italian food snobbery) But, whatever you like is what you like, and enjoy!
@Phreba I hypothesized it was a NY/ north Jersey thing as I don’t recall people so picky about this growing up in Central Pennsyltucky.
We have quite the influx of the “I’m from NY” crowd in the Poconos. When someone orders 1/4 lb of 7 different “let me see how thin” meats and 3 cheeses, I like to imagine them stoned AF eating a Scooby Doo sammie. But the time-is-money mentality I have makes me want to scream.
@bethbjammin @Phreba Any respectable deli should ask every customer how they want each meat and cheese they are purchasing to be sliced.
Here in the DC area, they will ask, but it’s very rare to find someone who truly understands what “thin” means to this Philly native.
@Mdphunk @bethbjammin lol, love it Beth. I can just see it. I know better than to be picky outside of the northeast corridor. DCish to Boston gets it.
@Mdphunk @Phreba There is nothing respectable about this deli. Other choices include pickled beet eggs, stuffed cabbage & three-potato summer salad (whatever that is). I usually drive >45 minutes to shop in better stores, but once in a while I get desperate & must resort to the Mom & Pop’s Open-Carry Store. At least they have Boar’s Head.
@Mdphunk What part of Philly? My parents were both from the outskirts- Havertown & Lower Merion. I spent big chunks of my young life there.
@bethbjammin I’m from that neck of the woods. My mom is from Havertown.
