Waimate -- elevated nitrates
The Waimate District Council is advising users of the Lower Waihao Rural Water Scheme to cease water consumption immediately as nitrate levels have breached the maximum accepted value.
They don't give the latest readings but levels have been peaking for over a month, dangerously close to the council's 50mg/L limit.
On its nitrate map, Greenpeace cites low concentrations of nitrate as being less than 1 mg/L.
But look at the level of poison they're drinking in Waimate. The council reports nitrate levels of 47mg/L but claims that's "safe" as the limit is apparently set at 50mg/L.
Can the council really claim that 47mg/L is "safe"?
