This episode is like a mini sewing challenge!

We each sewed a skort and we discuss it for the first time on the pod. We chat about the patterns and fabrics we chose for our skorts, our experiences sewing them up, and how we wear them!

What do you think of skorts? Tell us in the comments!

Christine Millar (aka Sewstine) went to a ball at the Palace of Versailles!

Sewing historical gowns is a fun activity in itself, but wearing them to events must be a next-level feeling. In this week's episode, Christine tells us about learning historical dances in the Hall of Mirrors and planning her own ball in Chicago. So amazing!

Christine Millar (aka Sewstine) is a machine embroidery wizard! 🪄

In this week's episode, we ask her all of our burning machine embroidery questions. How does she design her own embroidery files? How long do the embroideries take? What stabilizer does she use? Does she have to babysit the machine the whole time? She answers them all, plus tells us about costuming events, her fave features of historical costumes, and her path to historical costuming.

Have you ever done machine embroidery?

Wearing Ease vs. Design Ease 📏

Ease is the extra width and length that pattern designers add into their pattern pieces. Wearing ease is the minimum ease that you add so that people can move around in their clothes. Design ease is added just for the look of it! For example, in Helen's most recent design, the #FalconerPants, there is minimum wearing ease from the waist to the hips - then there is design ease added to the legs to create the barrel shape!

To learn more about ease and how you can make it work for you, listen to this week's episode!

The type of fabric you use can change up how much ease you need!

Ease is the extra length and width that pattern drafters add (or subtract!) from pattern pieces so that you can move around (and for style). A fitted knit top, like Caroline's #BFCarrieCrop, can have zero ease or even negative ease - the stretch of the fabric makes up for it. Woven garments, like Helen's #LockhartJumpsuit, have minimum requirements for positive ease.

Understanding ease is a game-changer for making garments that fit. Listen to this week's episode for lots more info!

Ease-y does it 😉

Ease is the extra length and width that pattern designers add so that you can move in your clothes. In this episode, we talk about how ease works and how to figure out the amount of ease that YOU like. It’s a game-changer for making clothes that fit! We also answer a listener question about grading between sizes vs. pattern adjustments.

Do you take ease into account when you're choosing your pattern size?

These flowy pinstripe #LockhartPants go well with the Soft Power trend!

In this week's episode, we react to rising fashion trends for spring 2025, including Soft Power: flowy, drapey, soft versions of traditional suiting. Helen immediately thought of these pinstripe trousers she made as a hack for the Lockhart Jumpsuit pattern. Check out the Helen's Closet blog for more info on the hack. Listen to the episode to hear us review the trends and recommend ways to incorporate them into your me-mades!

What do you think of the Soft Power trend?

After college, Caroline and her roommate bought a used industrial machine to share. But getting it in and out of her walkup apartment in Montreal was harrowing! It puts the "pivot" scene from Friends to shame, honestly - Caroline's brother barely escaped with his life. 😂

Industrial machines are heavy and go very fast, but they do the job well! Caroline doesn't have one anymore, but there could be one in the future for the Blackbird warehouse. Listen to this week's episode to hear lots of stories about our past, present, and future sewing machines!

Have you ever used an industrial machine?

Helen learned to sew on this Singer Featherweight - an antique machine that is coveted by many collectors for its simplicity, lightweightness, and even stitching. The only stitch that it does is a straight stitch, but it does it really well! Plus, it's friendly for user repairs and lasts for many years (this pic was taken recently - Helen's mom still has it!). Nowadays, Helen now enjoys a much higher-tech Pfaff Expression 710. Caroline has the same machine, but she has some notes... 👀

Listen to this week's episode, number 277: Sewing Machine Chat, to hear why Caroline prefers her Bernina!

WE'RE BACK with the first episode of the spring 2025 season! 🥳

In this one, we chat about our sewing machines - the ones we learned on, the ones we have today, and the ones we want in the future. Plus: we catch up about what we did on our winter break, name our fave sewing machine features and pet peeves, and share what our machines are named!

What machine(s) do you have, and do you recommend it (them)?

This pattern is my second published shawl, the Long Cuddle Shawl. It uses a slip stitch pattern that creates and extra dense and squishy fabric which, it turns out, is also extra warm. Absolutely perfect for cuddling into on cold days.

Because it’s so squishy, it uses 3 skeins of yarn. The sample was knit in a silk/merino combo from Mountain Colors Yarn.
