The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sent an urgent message out to patrol cars Wednesday afternoon, warning deputies in Altadena that, after days of nearby wildfires, the air is so toxic they should wear masks and decontaminate their uniforms before stepping foot in their homes.
Sent at 4:35 p.m., the message began “**Attn all personnel**” and said that the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s hazmat team reported the air in Altadena is “‘hazardous, containing lead, asbestos and other harmful particulates.”

As a fmr. firefighter I can account that any #LithiumBattery fire would be left to controllably burn out when feasible because there ain't #HAZMAT suits rated for such heat exposure and #Nomex won't protect against gaseous exposures and fumes, which is why firefighters sometimes have to undress with the respirator on to not get intoxicated from the fumes in their jackets when facing a regular household fire...

Its recommended to stay in doors from 7pm through 7am tonight. The batteries have been damaged, and are on fire and off-gassing (with reports of one battery exploding). LAFD Hazardous Materials specialists are on scene. Firefighters have created a large perimeter around the site and are in the defensive mode (keeping their distance with hose lines for protection). There are no evacuations and no widespread or off-site hazard. The 47 Freeway remains closed east of Ferry.
