I really enjoy reading comments on my favorite podcast episodes in Patreon. Problem is, I don’t listen to my podcasts in Patreon, I use Pocket Casts.

I can’t wait for the day when more creators move to open, federated platforms to host their podcasts, so we can all participate in the discussion in one place, the Fediverse. Are there any popular tools like that? I only know of WordPress right now, and while it works it’s not necessarily known for podcasting. I think Castopod does this maybe?

I’d love to get a list of old school bloggers who are still at it. How would you go about that?

Building a list of old school bloggers

@davew After all these years, I think « webrings » and « blogrolls » is still the right answer to that question. Bloggers manually curating lists of other bloggers still feels like the most trustworthy source of inspiration for me.

Just like jumping from one Wikipedia article to another to learn new things can be fun, jumping from one site to another in a webring can be just as fun I think!

As an alternative, Kagi also recently created a « Small Web » list of active bloggers and content creators. I’ve been pretty happy with it. You can browse it here, and access the full list via RSS or an OPML file here.

TIL about CryptPad, a Google Docs alternative. Somehow this is the first time I hear about it! The project seems pretty cool. @Em0nM4stodon wrote an extensive guide about it:

If you have been looking for a privacy-respectful replacement to Google Docs, now is the time to move! 📦

@cryptpad offers a full office suite that is completely end-to-end encrypted and built from the ground up with data minimization in mind.

And it’s free! 🎉

Why stay with Google when there is a much better option literally right there👇

CryptPad Review: Replacing Google Docs

I’m thinking I may give it a try locally, although I will keep an eye on the GitHub repo before I set up an instance for my family. I’m not seeing a ton of activity in the past month, but it could just be temporary. I do see that they have secured some EU funding, they already make money through their hosted instance, they make supporting them easy via OpenCollective, and they’re open about their financial status, so that’s all promising signs in my book!

After 5 years with Proton, I moved to Fastmail this week.

Proton was okay, but never really lived up to the hype that got me there in the first place. Proton Mail itself works fine, it includes the features we’ve come to expect from every email provider. Its search functionality is really bad though. It is understandable given the product’s emphasis on security, but also annoying to work with every day.

Its other services (Calendars, Drive, Pass) would need some serious love to become truly useful and competitive products. Unfortunately, the company doesn’t seem to be able to dedicate enough resources to be able to move the needle with those products.

And then in the past year,

  1. The company started emailing surveys asking if I was interested in AI. I don’t think that should be the company’s priority right now. I understand the need to communicate on the matter, but I’d rather see the team communicate on improvements around search, around a better calendar, or a Pass product that can replace my 1Password subscription. When I need AI, I turn to experts on the matter.
  2. There were multiple outages within a few weeks, which was odd. Growing pains maybe? It’s annoying when you’re trying to access your emails.

So I moved to Fastmail. An australian company with its servers in the US. Is that better for my privacy? Definitely not. Will I regret the move? Hopefully not. Do I enjoy the move so far? Yes, the email interface is a lot faster, and search just works!

Publishing this today, I’ll post again if I move to a different provider in the future. At least by having my emails under custom domains, it’s relatively easy to move!

Struggling with the site editor tonight, and I think I’ll throw in the towel. I can’t figure out why after creating a taxonomy-taxonomy_name.html template file, and seeing it in the site editor, it’s not used to display the contents of that taxonomy’s archive pages on the frontend. Is it just not supported yet? I thought every single use-case of the classic template hierarchy could be used in block-based themes’ templates too…

Due to their declining quality I've been listening less #BBC and been picking up new #podcasts from the other parts of the #world and some are #US based. So I've been listening a lot of discussions about US elections and (from my #Eastern #European perspective) this has been kind of insane experience. Anyway, if you know some good not US focused podacasts in #EN or #GER, please share. I'm generally interested of #human #experience but also #music, #science, #knowledge, #innovation and #politics.

@Moss It’s definitely doable. The good news is, you don’t need a specific plugin to handle the display of your posts on your site. That can all be done using stock WordPress and its site editor. Here are a few examples of basic themes that have a post grid displaying images, to give you some examples. You can build your own or customize any of these from the editor, without having to install plugins or touch code.

I must warn you though: WordPress is still rough around the edges as Fediverse software. It is a good experience for producing content, but we still have work to do to improve the interaction part of the Fediverse experience (liking, boosting)!

After finishing The Mercy of Gods by James S.A. Corey, I had to read the novella set in the same universe! It was a quick read, and for the most part you cannot really tell it’s set in the same world. It’s a really good story though, just like the other novellas from the author. You’re really left wanting more. I don’t really expect the main books will ever explore that part of the universe though, so I’m left a bit disappointed.

I would still recommend the book in any case! 🙂

static website with rss

WordPress is way too ambitious for a very simple website that lists cool blogs like blogroll.fr and I'd like to turn the current website into a static website, using ideally only HTML and CSS, or a tiny bit of something else if really needed.

The only thing that really worries me is that I would like to keep an RSS feed so that it's easy to follow when blogs are added (an

Re:RSS feeds or blogs?

I'm somewhere between the first two blog posts.

My flow for news consumption, in short, is see in RSS reader -> send anything longer than a couple of paragraphs to my e-reader for comfortable reading.

For the shortest posts, I often click just to give people a view (if they have analytics) and check if there's a like button of some sort, given how much I love receiving likes.

In both case
