A few hours have gone by and the states are not increasing, and the site is still behaving normally AFAIK, so now I’ll let it run and check counters once in a while. 🥳

Such a relief if this fixed it, heading into con is our busiest period of the year and the last thing we need is site reachability problems.

I feel a bit like a digital archeologist, but without the fantastic FreeBSD forums and decades of mailing lists searchable I would never have found a solution.

Alright, #DEFCON web sites are back with the patch appied. I had to tweak it a bit, but seems to be happy now.

Now I'll keep an eye on things, and if all is well the LAST_ACK and FIN_WAIT_2 states should no longer increase forever consuming all sockets. defcon.org

Please let me know if you see any strange behavior! Next up to patch the forum.defcon.org server. It is suffering the same fate.

OK, this is crazy. I (think) I have finally found a clue as to what is causing the web server to slowly choke on too many open connections.

This thread from 2001 (!!!) explains the problem, AND IT IS STILL HAPPENING 24 years later. #FreeBSD

@thedarktangent HEY! kinda random. But do dad's ever take their children to #defcon?

I have a 9yo son who loves coding academy, playing wifh locks, and tinkering with his pizero.

But whenever I see clips online about DefCon - it doesnt seem many bring little ones. Is there an age recommendation?

Just a short on the #Hadnagy v #Defcon case. Ive been waiting for the motion for summary dismissal to be rules on before posting a followup. Heres just a quick video to summarize the entire course of this ordeal in courts but i will be doing a video recapping what happened through the past years and specifically will go through the discovery (sans victim names) to detail the allegations and especially those actions hat Hadnagy agreed in deposition he did.

But all in all the transparency report by DEFCON has been officially ruled as TRUE which is a total defense to defamation and is dismissed with prejudice meaning Hadnagys only recourse is to appeal up as he cannot bring these allegations to court again. I hope not just for his victims sake but his own dignity (if he has any left) that he walks away.

Partially to decompress, and follow in this years #DEFCON theme, I re-configured our #Tor server to double our number of relays from 4 IPv4 + 4 IPv6 to 8+8, the most allowed to run on a single IP.

Next week I’ll look into doubling it again on a second IP after I have a better idea of bandwidth used.

I hope others are also doing something, no matter how small, to help support and grow our communities.

I’m still decompressing from that big legal win again Chris Hadnagy. So many crazy stories I hope to tell, and some lessons learned along the way.

We have been battling his nonsense for so long it will take some time to get used to not having to deal with it.
