#CarbonOffset markets are growing fast, but they're fueling land grabs in #Africa, displacing local and Indigenous communities.

Rich (read: powerful) nations buy carbon credits to offset emissions, but these projects often ignore local rights, leading to #greenwashing and #neocolonialism.

To fight #ClimateChange justly, we need to focus on community rights and real, sustainable solutions, not profit-driven schemes.

Time Magazine: Bogus Carbon Credits are a ‘Pervasive’ Problem, Scientists Warn

A study covering almost 300 #CarbonOffset projects found that the industry’s top registries have consistently allowed developers to claim far more #climate saving benefits than justified.

Researchers led by Barbara Haya from the University of Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy assessed the methods underpinning forestry projects responsible for 11% of all #carbon #offsets ever issued. They found shortcomings in each that resulted in bogus credits.

“Offsetting is a misnomer — you can’t ‘offset’ your emissions,” she said. “We need alternative ways of supporting climate mitigation because the current offset market is deeply not working.”

Tidal Restoration is important and effective carbon sequestration and provides other environmental services. However there are challenges in accurate measurement, and in assuring permanence. This is especially likely with a warming climate and increasing #sealevelrise that may change rate of sequestration, or even release the carbon due to extreme events such as the 2016 Gulf of Carpentaria mangrove dieback.

#ACCUs or #CarbonOffset credits generated by this methodology should definitely not be used to offset Scope 1 and 2 emissions from new fossil fuel projects.

www.jcu.edu.auGulf mangrove dieback discoveryBreakthrough research by James Cook University scientists has solved the mystery of the catastrophic death of 40 million mangrove trees around the Gulf of Carpentaria in 2016 – and the discovery could help scientists predict, and possibly prevent, future events.

Germany’s Das Erste TV channel recently broadcast a documentary titled “Klimaneutral? Von wegen”.

If you’re British, that translates as “Climate neutral? As if”. And if you’re from the US it’s, “Climate neutral? My ass”.

Fossil fuel companies are now acknowledging #ClimateChange but are using #NetZero emissions as a PR strategy.

This approach relies heavily on #CarbonOffset. These offsets are often unreliable and don't contribute significantly to emission reductions.

Many large corporations, have committed to net-zero targets, but their actions may not align with these claims. Free media is challenged to scrutinise the credibility of these net-zero initiatives.

Revealed: top #CarbonOffset projects may not cut planet-heating emissions theguardian.com/environment/20 “The vast majority of the environmental projects most frequently used to #offset #GreenhouseGas #emissions appear to have fundamental failings suggesting they cannot be relied upon to cut planet-heating emissions, according to a new analysis.

there is mounting evidence suggesting that many of these offset schemes exaggerate climate benefits and underestimate potential harms.”

I've been arguing for years that "carbon offset payments" (and CO2 certificate trade in general) is modern sale of indulgence, and thus fraud, now look who supports my stance: pluralistic.net/2023/09/16/mur

Letting kids plant mono cultural commercial forests under the guise of environment conversation is an especially evil plot even I wouldn't have expected, though.
