The company which owns the Whakapapa ski field has expressed interest in redeveloping and running the Chateau Tongariro. Whakapapa Holdings says "... the agreement would need to be a long term lease at a peppercorn rental rate."

As the only other viable option is leaving the earthquake-prone building to rot, this seems to be a better idea.
