As I've now reached the end, I want to thank @AndorianSoup, @HippieScubaSteve, @AlsoPaisleyCat and @theresmiling for starting the #StarTrek31DayChallenge.

Because of this challenge, I've written more blogs (because that's what I turned them into, oops) in this past month than I have in years. Coming up with these responses has caused me to examine my fandom in ways I never really had before in 30+ years of being a Trekkie, and I feel more prepared for discussions about this stuff in the future.

It has also gotten me out of my shell a bit on Mastodon, and given me something cool to talk about every day. I even mostly kept up with it on the daily, though that wasn't a requirement!

#StarTrek31DayChallenge Day 28 - Fave Episode Set in the Present Day

I really liked the Voyager two-parter "Future's End".

Not only was this just a fun time travel story, but it also gave us the Doctor's Mobile Emitter, which permanently changed the show for the better. It also featured some great guest stars in Ed Begley, Jr. and Sarah Silverman. While I'm less keen on the subplot with Chakotay and Torres, I do think that could have gone somewhere interesting if they had been given the 4-parter they wanted for this story instead of just two episodes.

It was also just cool to see the location shots filmed in the Los Angeles area. I've never been there, but I was playing a lot of Grand Theft Auto V during my last rewatch, and it was fun to see the characters out at the Santa Monica Pier or Venice Beach or the Griffith Observatory and be like "I was driving a tank there last night!"

This might seem counterintuitive, but Earth.

Earth is a wonderful place when humans aren't ruining it. The idea of an Earth that is inhabited by humans who have figured out we don't need billionaires and religious wars and nuclear bombs and slavery and violence and suffering and capitalism? Humans who have not only reversed climate change, but learned to control the weather? That sounds perfect, actually.

Also, Earth is a hub. It's the home of the Federation and Starfleet, and you can get to many other star systems pretty easily from there. But you don't even have to go that far - you can vacation on several now-inhabited worlds in the Solar System, taking in a Martian sunset or imbibing some of that "green drink" on Ganymede.

#StarTrek31DayChallenge Day 22 - Fave Federation Starship

I'm not obsessive about starship designs. I have a lot of love for the Enterprise-D because I grew up with it, and I recognize a Constitution-class or Excelsior-class when I see one. There are a lot of great ships in Trek, but some of them have more story behind them than others.

And that's why I like the USS Defiant (NX-74205). It was small, light and nimble, so it could dance around big battles without attracting too much attention.

But it was also designed "to fight and defeat the Borg," so it was heavily armed. Weapons-wise, this thing was the equivalent of putting a turbocharged V8 into a Mini Cooper.

Sisko pulled it out of mothballs, Chief O'Brien made it spaceworthy, and they slapped a cloaking device into it. It was a front-line fighter during the Dominion War. When it got destroyed in the Second Battle of Chin'toka, they just got another Defiant-class and switched out the nameplate, ensuring the Tough Little Ship would live on.

Most crucially from a story perspective, the introduction of the Defiant offered a way for DS9 characters to leave the station without having to rely on a glorified shuttlecraft to get them places. It opened up the show in a way that had never been an option before, and it was one of the key factors that helped DS9 reach the heights it did in those later seasons.

Day 31 Cliffhanger

TNG "The Best of Both Worlds."

There were other contenders. But, the "I am Locutus of Borg" moment left me thunderstruck.

My jaw dropped the first time I saw this episode, and I spent the months before TNG S4E1 with my mind in a whirlwind. Was this the end of Picard? Was TNG going to turn into the Riker and Shelby show? Oh yeah, and was Earth doomed?

I'm not a fan of end of season cliffhangers. None are favorites. This one stunned me the most.

Day 29 – Character Who Inspires You

Jadzia and Ezri Dax.
They mean a lot to me. I've admired Jadzia from the beginning, but only when Ezri arrived I understood something about myself that I had not been able to see before. And when Ezri had a big role (and that wonderful conversation with Worf in the transporter room) in David Mack's Destiny trilogy it only added to that.

Shoutout to Lwaxana Troi. She is so underrated. So much personality, love, kindness, loneliness, and joy in one character. She inspires me to be kind, to not let myself be deceived by appearances. She's amazing. If she were my mother, I'd totally be embarassed and annoyed, but she isn't. And so I get to love and admire her.

Day 28 – Episode Set in the Present Day

"Future's End", Voyager S3 E08 & 09

No Way! -- Waaaay!
My favourite line. 😁
It's the episode where the Doctor gets his mobile emitter. What a game changer that was.

Shoutout to SNW's "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow". (S2E03) It's funny (Pelia is the best), it's dramatic, it's super sad.
😭😭😭 I love it. It's one of my top faves.

(I deleted the "Fave" in the prompt, because I just want to pick "one" of many great ones.)

Day 29 Character Who Inspires

TOS's Spock and Uhura. Their influence is inseparable. Spock's logic is a baseline that impressed me as a child, and remains with me today. As a child, views I experienced in life were confusing. A logical progression in thought made sense.

Uhura was my first time seeing a Black woman in space, in a command position. I cannot overstate how amazing it was to see her, to imagine myself as myself, on the bridge of the USS Enterprise.

Bajor.
I always liked the matte painting they used. I am interested in their culture/s, their food. Always the food. Food is so interesting and great. (I'm a Taurus after all.
😅) I am not a religious person, but I am fascinated by people who are. And the Bajoran religion sounds fascinating. I am interested in myths and mythologies of all kind.

So shoutout to Vulcan. It may be too hot for my taste, but the culture and spirituality fascinate me.
