Photograph. An old black and white photo of a female ice skater on a frozen lake, taken from above. The sunlight falls like a spotlight on the young woman in the long dress in her athletic movement. She herself appears like a graceful shadow. All around her are the endless circles of scratched ice from her laps on the lake. Wonderful play with light and a perfect shot.
Info: The photograph shows the Austrian figure skating champion Melitta Brunner training on the ice in St. Moritz in 1934. Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898 - 1995) was one of the most influential photojournalists of the 20th century. He was adept at both humorous photo reportages and time-critical photographs. He photographed people from contemporary history as well as completely unknown people. Eisenstaedt preferred to rely on the lighting conditions he found and worked with highly sensitive film material and an open aperture; he did without flash and staged scenes in order to preserve the authenticity of the situation.
