New developments:
REJECT SEISMIC BLASTING NEXT TO WHALE CALVING GROUNDS
A multinational geotechnical company called #CGG is trying to get regulatory approval to seismic blast over 3,000 square kilometres of #Australia ’s oceans.
The proposal includes plans to start #SeismicBlasting just a few kilometres away from the last regular calving grounds for south-east Australia’s 300 remaining southern #RightWhales.

If approved, it will be the world’s largest 3D #SeismicBlasting project on record.
Companies’ applications for plans to conduct seismic blasting go to the regulator NOPSEMA for approval, and then to the administrator NOPTA to be granted an SPA permit.
This action is about safeguarding critical marine #habitats, preserving #biodiversity, and protecting the livelihoods of #communities that depend on healthy oceans.

These blasts are among the loudest human-made sounds in the #ocean, just short of those caused by explosive devices, and have a devastating effect on #MarineLife.
• #SeismicBlasting has been connected to temporary and permanent #HearingLoss, #HabitatAbandonment, mating and feeding #disruption and possible #death in marine #mammals like #whales.
• The blasts lead to #scallop deaths by compromising their immune systems and have been found to irreversibly damage the organs of #lobsters.

ABOLISH SEISMIC BLASTING SPECIAL PROSPECTING AUTHORITY PERMITS (SPA)
A Special Prospecting Authority (SPA) is a specific type of permit that allows #companies to buy access to large areas of our #oceans to use #SeismicBlasting to search for #oil and #gas, and Carbon Capture and Storage locations below the ocean floor.
Seismic blasts are how the oil and gas industry surveys the ocean floor. Seismic vessels tow an array of airguns and audio receivers (hydrophones) behind them in the water.

NO SEISMIC BLASTING IN THE ARCTIC
#ConocoPhillips, an oil and gas giant, is seeking approval to conduct #SeismicBlasting in search of #oil and #gas in the #Arctic.
ConocoPhillips' seismic application, which was submitted to the #Biden administration, requests testing across more than 270,000 acres of the Arctic. It would involve months of dragging heavy thumper trucks and other machinery across a fragile #ecosystem.

SUPPORT PROTECTING FOR THESE ENDANGERED WHALES
The Gulf of Mexico is home to Rice's whales, one of the world's most endangered whale species. Fewer than 50 of these magnificent mammals remain — yet they have no federally protected critical #habitat.
Rice's whales are hovering on the brink of #extinction. Vessel collisions, #oil spills, and chronic #noise from #SeismicBlasting and other #OilIndustry activities all threaten their survival.

#SeismicBlasting is deadly for #MarineLife and can impact all levels of the #FoodChain from its very foundations, killing #zooplankton more than a kilometre away, to deafening #whales.
Send an email asking #NOPSEMA to reject the proposal using our form and prefilled submission.
