It's time to start digging in to my mask project!

I need good, solid resources to back up a presentation I'll be giving to the local public. What are the most reliable and ethical doctors, journalists, advocates, research, statistics, or sites that you've seen?

I'll be talking about air quality, advocating environmental justice through citizen science and mutual aid, and my focus is going to be ventilation and masking.

The program is organized by a local group of folks that started putting up air sensors all over town because of toxic chemical leaks from nearby refineries. They got a grant through a university, and they may be able to help me out in getting an air quality sensor so I can test the CO2 in local buildings. I'd also like to be able to pass out some mask samples. I've been trying to find info on other things like sip valves, elastomeric respirator exhaust valve filter adapters, good sites to buy masks and so on.

Since these issues got politicized and the CDC and WHO are increasingly corrupt/hamstrung, finding good info is a fuckin MESS. I could really use some help!

What's been very interesting to me is, the folks who promote masking are usually ALSO right on other issues. Masks are required at the local anarchist book fairs, for example, which to me says a LOT. The people I follow here on Mastodon who are solidly against genocide, fascism, capitalism, and lesser evilism are the SAME people who are solidly for issues like universal healthcare, right to repair, accessibility, direct action, labor organizing, etc etc-- you have a moral consistency that inspires my respect and hope, and I want to learn more from you!

Next post below will be where I list the sources I've collected, updating as I go.

#NorthShore brush fires sent smoke to #Boston — and eluded #AirQuality readers

Story by Steph Solis
October 28, 2024

"The smoke from brush fires around #Salem wafted over Boston on Monday, puzzling residents who got no indication of it from air quality readings on their phones.

"Why it matters: As #ClimateChange makes wildfires more likely and severe in the U.S., #Massachusetts residents will have to learn to detect the signs and protect themselves.

"Catch up quick: Firefighters are battling brush fires across #Salem, #Peabody and #Lynn, sending smoke as far south as Foxborough.

"More than 130 acres of brush have burned since Saturday, NBC Boston reported.

"Between the lines: Smoke inhalation can harm people with all sorts of health conditions, from those with asthma and emphysema to heart attack survivors.

"It's especially risky for children, whose lungs are still developing, says Anthony Wexler, director of the Air Quality Research Center at UC Davis.

"Multiple studies show air pollution can hurt lung development.

"How it works: The smoke smell caught locals' attention in the morning, as opposed to Monday afternoon, because smoke stays close to the ground after the Sun sets, Wexler says.

Once the Sun rises, it warms up the ground and mixes low-lying air with cleaner air above, causing the smoke to dissipate as the day progresses.

"Yes, but: The smoke didn't show up on some air quality readings, like the ones on iPhones.

"That's because the state and federal governments only have a few air quality monitors in a given community. If a plume of smoke passed through your neighborhood but missed the monitor, the reading will end up lower.

"Commercial air quality readers like #PurpleAir monitors are inexpensive and more common, so they can give better readings, Wexler notes.

"#AirNow, the federal government's service, also has better readings on its smoke and fire map."

Merry Christmas! But, maybe don’t burn that Yule log when there’s an inversion layer trapping in pollution?

The air quality in Nor Cal in general is a bit low from numerous factors today, but the way the worst readings are scattered suggest there are a lot of people celebrating the holiday by burning wood.

Ugh for all of us who have asthma and other breathing issues. I got caught off guard with a direct stream of wood smoke yesterday while I was running and it took me about 12 hours to stop coughing.

Well this sucks. The wildfire smoke from the northernmost part of California and from Oregon is hitting my area real hard totally out of the blue. I was sitting around and all of a sudden my eyes burned and throat was uncomfortable.

Then I checked #PurpleAir and realized why. This is supposed to continue for a few days. I hope that ends up being wrong. I’ve got an outdoor event coming up this week.
