Republicans who control the Wisconsin state Senate 💥fired eight more of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ appointees 💥Tuesday, including two Universities of Wisconsin #regents who voted against a deal that limited campus #diversity and four judicial #watchdogs who wouldn’t commit to punishing liberal state Supreme Court Justice Janet #Protasiewicz.
The Senate also fired a member of the governor’s #domestic #abuse #council after Republicans accused the body of violating open records laws and taking what the GOP considered a stance against #white people, as well as a member of the deferred compensation board, which administers a state retirement program.
The Senate has now fired 21 Evers appointees since the governor took office in 2019.
The governor said in a statement Tuesday that he was “apoplectic” that Republican senators keep firing his appointees for no good reason.

"Quite simply, Protasiewicz’s victory represents an existential threat to the Wisconsin Republican Party because there are now two lawsuits challenging their gerrymandered maps. Though the state Supreme Court has not even yet said it will take either of the cases, Republicans are terrified their stranglehold on the state will be loosened."

“Our country has never seen anything quite like what is unfolding in Wisconsin. …

The Republican initiative is about more than trying to take out one political opponent in one state. Rather, it is part of a cross-national MAGA assault on truth, government institutions, the law and the vote itself."

The Tennessee Expulsion Is a Glimpse of the Future

Clearly, expelling two members of the Tennessee legislature was an explosive move and temporarily leaves their constituents no representation, at least until a special election is held.

In fact, the state party is already raising money for the members to win back their seats.

Meanwhile, there’s another story playing out 600 miles to the north that highlights another, potentially even more consequential use of hard-ball legislative power.

While liberals were celebrating the election Tuesday of a #Wisconsin #Supreme #Court #justice who will tip the court to the left, voters in the state’s 8th senatorial district were sending #Republican #Dan #Knodl to Madison.

That gives the GOP a Senate #supermajority and with it, the power to remove key officials through #impeachment — including judges.

In late March, Knodl said he would “#certainly #consider” impeaching #Janet #Protasiewicz, the new state Supreme Court justice, though he was talking about her role as a county judge.

Would Wisconsin Republicans impeach a justice simply because they don’t like the court’s rulings? Well, there is nothing hypothetical about how the state’s GOP legislature has used its power against other branches of government

Greg Sargent: Wisconsin’s stunning outcome puts #MAGA Republicans in a serious bind

"One might surmise that a pro-choice message motivated educated suburbanites to swamp non-college-educated White turnout, without #Protasiewicz improving among that latter demographic. But [Charles] Franklin [director of Wisconsin’s Marquette Law School Poll] noted that she did surprisingly well in 'rural and working-class areas' in southwestern counties that #tRump carried twice, and made 'inroads in rural counties up the Mississippi River.' He concluded: 'That’s really notable.'"

Wisconsin’s stunning outcome puts MAGA Republicans in a serious bind

To understand the significance of the victory that liberals just pulled off in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race, a win largely driven by #abortion #rights, consider what is set to happen some 1,100 miles from Madison: In coming weeks, Republicans in Florida’s state capital of Tallahassee are expected to #ban abortions after a mere six weeks.

Liberal Janet #Protasiewicz was elected to Wisconsin’s high court Tuesday night by 55 percent to 45 percent over rival Daniel Kelly. That stunning margin in a razor-close swing state — delivering liberals control of the court as it prepares to consider a state abortion ban — suggests abortion rights will continue to be a winning issue when on the ballot.

But this becomes more significant with 2024 GOP hopefuls such as Florida Gov. Ron #DeSantis lurching in the opposite direction. DeSantis is expected to sign that six-week abortion ban, and many other Republican state governments are moving to further #restrict abortion rights — even as this has again proved a huge political loser.

The Wisconsin results suggest a trend that developed in the 2022 midterm elections will continue. Candidates who stood up for abortion rights — and emphasized that #protecting #democracy is critical to #safeguarding those #rights — defeated anti-choice, election-denying MAGA candidates everywhere

Kelly travels, Protasiewicz grounded with illness in Wisconsin election windup

The final full day of campaigning for a crucial seat on the #Wisconsin #Supreme #Court saw one candidate flying from city to city across Wisconsin while the other was grounded once again because of a respiratory infection.

Conservative Former Justice Daniel #Kelly spent Monday on a seven-city trip across Wisconsin, stretching from Waukesha to Hudson, in a #private #jet apparently owned by a family of #anti-#abortion #advocates. It marked the fourth day that Kelly has been barnstorming across the state.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Janet #Protasiewicz, by contrast, was not to be found on the campaign trail for the fifth consecutive day because of illness, forcing surrogates to fill in for her.

Protasiewicz, a liberal, was last seen campaigning on Wednesday during a virtual forum sponsored by the Milwaukee chapter of the NAACP.

Campaign officials said she has continued to test #negative for #COVID-19.
