From 2017: As Catastrophic #Flooding Hits Houston, Fears Grow of #Pollution from #OilRefineries & #Superfund Sites

#DemocracyNow, August 28, 2017

"A catastrophic storm has hit Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city and home to the largest refining and #petrochemical complex in the United States. The crisis began on Friday when Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Rockport, Texas. It was the most powerful hurricane to strike the state in more than 50 years. Much of the damage has been caused by the massive rainfall, with parts of Texas already receiving 30 inches of rain. That could top 50 inches in the coming days. Entire highways in Houston are now underwater. The storm has caused five reported deaths, but the death toll is expected to rise. Thousands of people are still stranded in their homes, waiting to be rescued. Meanwhile, the city of Dallas prepares to turn its convention center into a mega-shelter to host 5,000 evacuees. The National Weather Service released a statement on Sunday saying, 'This event is unprecedented and all impacts are unknown and beyond anything experienced.' We speak with Bryan Parras, an organizer for the #BeyondDirtyFuels campaign with the #SierraClub in Houston, Texas. He helped found the #EnvironmentalJustice group t.e.j.a.s."

#Ukraine #FailedRuRevenge #DutchMedia

I'm constantly irritated by the Dutch media [Public and Commercial].
Every evening attacks on Ukraine with drones and missiles are mentioned [rightfully so] but never a mention of any Ukrainian successful attacks on Russian military targets.
Never a mention of drones on #Oilrefineries , #Oildepots , #FuelDepots , #WeaponFactories , #MissileInstallations nor #DroneCommandPosts. Ukraine is constantly portraied as a defenseless victim
whereas the truth is, in my opinion, that the Kremlin is at the point of collaps without targetting civilians. I greatly admire their restraint. But what about sanctions ? EU is still importing Russian gas, is hardly operating against the black fleet. And lets criminals deliver essential parts to Russia.
By victimizing Ukraine the Dutch media put themselves in a favorable light where it should also be blaming themselves.

#Sanctions are not a magic wand that fix things instantly (I say this because some people think sanctions "aren't doing anything" to #Russia)

Sanctions are a slowly tightening vise that squeezes and squeezes a little more... until things start to break

Things are starting to break:

"Russia #oil #trade to #China, #India stalls as sanctions drive up shipping costs"

Combine this with #Ukraine's #drones hitting more and more #Russian #oilRefineries

Insight: Three Exxon refineries top the list of U.S. polluters

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Reuters) - "#ExxonMobil's U.S. #OilRefineries refineries pump out far more #lung-damaging soot than similarly-sized facilities operated by rivals, according to regulatory documents and a Reuters analysis of pollution test results.

"The Texas-based firm's three largest #refineries - two in #Texas and one in #Louisiana - are the nation's top three emitters of small #particulatematter according to the analysis of the latest tests submitted to regulators by the nation's 10 largest refineries.

"The three Exxon refineries together averaged emissions of 80 pounds per hour, eight times the average rate of the seven other refineries on the top-ten list, some of which are larger than Exxon's plants, the analysis shows. The top polluter, Exxon's #BatonRouge refinery, averaged 138 pounds per hour.

"The performance reflects the firm's inadequate spending to cut emissions, said Wilma Subra, a Louisiana-based scientist who formerly served on the Environmental Protection Agency's National Environmental Justice Advisory Council.

"'Exxon has all the resources in the world to lower its pollution rates dramatically,' she said.

"The company has taken heat for years for its environmental performance. This week, Exxon lost at least two seats on its board of directors to an activist hedge fund seeking to force the firm to reckon with #ClimateChange.

"Exxon (XOM.N) said in a statement that it tries [not very hard, apparently] to comply with environmental laws and has invested billions of dollars to reduce emissions over the last two decades." [And buy congress members]

Think that your #plastic is being recycled? Think again.

Plastic is cheap to make and shockingly profitable. It’s everywhere. And we’re all paying the price.

"#PlasticPollution—'a scourge on a planetary scale,' as French president Emmanuel Macron has put it—most affects those least able to deal with its consequences. Noting that the #PlasticIndustry generates upward of $700 billion a year in revenues, the UN Environment Programme (#UNEP) also concluded that the industry 'inflicts a heavy burden on #HumanHealth and #EnvironmentalDegradation, with the poorest in society facing the highest impacts whilst contributing the least to plastic over-consumption and waste.'

"This is true at every stage of plastic’s life cycle. #Manufacturing plants are concentrated in communities of color—such as in #Louisiana, in an area along the #MississippiRiver often called '#CancerAlley,' which is home to nearly 150 #OilRefineries, plastics plants, and #chemical facilities. Such plants emit #AirPollution that raises risks of cancer and other diseases. A panel of UN human rights experts said the situation amounts to a 'form of environmental racism [that] poses serious and disproportionate threats to the ... human rights of its largely #AfricanAmerican residents.'

"This pollution also disproportionately harms poor and developing countries that produce little or no plastic, such as those in #Africa, the #Pacific, and elsewhere."
