SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackTuning has always been an obsession with me. I hear any small discrepancy and that’s why the major third of a chord on guitar troubles me—it’s never perfectly in tune. I used this tuning fork for years, pinging it on my knee—a hard surface puts them out of tune—and then biting on it. The vibrations go through the bone and you can tune in surprisingly loud situations. I also used a test tone through modified headphones where I removed one earpiece. And now we use strobe-tuners. Progress? I don’t know as your ear becomes lazy, but it’s certainly easier .
