• 44yo cousin, father of 1 teenage son, diagnosed with what is most likely #leukemia; I don't know the stage, prognosis, or treatment plan yet

• his mom, my aunt (my mom's youngest sister), is in the late stages of Alzheimer's and could go anytime; for her sake, almost all of us think the sinner, the better; her husband is scared & refusing hospice

The good but busy news is that nearly 13yo is in a play and opening night is this evening. I'm glad rehearsals are over...

#Carbon14: Another underestimated danger from #nuclear reactors

"There are a number of radionuclides released from nuclear energy facilities. This paper highlights carbon-14 for a number of reasons:

- Carbon-14 is radioactive and is released into air as #methane and #CO2

- Before 2010, carbon-14 releases from nuclear reactors were virtually ignored in the United States. Today only estimates are required and only under certain restrictive circumstances.

- There is no good accounting of releases to date, so its impact on our health, our children’s health, and that of our
#environment remains unknown, yet environmental measurement is possible, but can be challenging under certain
conditions.

- Carbon-14 has a half-life of over 5700 years and the element carbon is a basic building block for life on earth. Therefore, “it constitutes a potential health hazard, whose additional production by #anthropogenic sources of today will result in an increased #radiation exposure to many future generations.”

- Like #tritium, it can collect in the tissues of the fetus at twice the concentration of the tissues in the mother, pointing to its
disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable human lifecycle: the developing child.

The element carbon is found in all organic substances. Carbon is also a primary constituent of #GreenhouseGases that are responsible for #ClimateChange, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (#CH4). Carbon-14 (c-14) is a radioactive form of
carbon that occurs in nature and is also newly formed in nuclear power processes.

"Carbon-14 is a health concern because it is released from #NuclearPower facilities as radioactive carbon dioxide and methane, traveling readily in the local and global environment.

"Over time, carbon-14 becomes part of organic material including food, and has a half-life of approximately 5,730 years, decaying by a type of radioactive particle called a beta. Its hazardous life is 10-20 times its half-life, meaning that harmful exposure to man-made carbon-14 can last for hundreds of generations. The radioactive carbon forms as a byproduct of fissioning of uranium fuel, through a process called activation. The final step is a chemical reaction between carbon-14 and oxygen or hydrogen, which forms methane or carbon dioxide. The radioactive carbon-14 formed by this process is brand new and would not exist without nuclear fission.

"During its long hazardous life, carbon-14 could be responsible for gross physical or
mental defects, stillbirths and childhood deaths, embryonic and neonatal deaths into the many millions over the life of the isotope.

"These millions could be underestimated five times or more. Carbon-14 could also be responsible for #leukemia, bone and other #cancers."

There's cruelty
Then there's #maga #cruelty:

"They were crying in fear. One of the agents at one point lifted up his shirt, which displayed the gun that he was carrying," Mukherjee said. "The 6-year-old boy was terrified to see the gun. He urinated on himself and wet all his clothing. No one offered him a change of clothing for many hours." 😭

My sister-in-law who has been a friend for over 20 years has been battling #Leukemia for 5 years, and is now halfway across the country receiving #stemcell treatments.

The treatments themselves are covered by our national healthcare system and my brother's insurance, however, travel, lost wages, child care and other expenses are NOT covered and must come out of pocket.

Sort of mind-blowing anecdote during my #leukemia treatment. Between hospitalizations I had outpatient clinic visits twice a week. My first time there I was sitting in the waiting room with 4 or 5 other patients, who were chatting.

One of the guys was talking about his experience getting CAR T treatment for lymphoma. CAR T is a fairly new, very high tech intervention. The man then veered off to discuss vaccines. "I took the flu shot, but refused the covid shot. No way I was taking that.

Hopefully the last #leukemia update for a while. Results today of high sensitivity PCR looking for sneaky cancer cells—NONE DETECTED! Woot!

So from here they’ll remove my central line (which I will def not miss) and then monthly monitoring for the next few years.

Thanks for all the good vibes, mastodon friends!

Just a quick #leukemia update. Finished my 2nd round of consolidation chemo, but as usual, 10 days later had to go back in for a neutropenic fever for 5 days of antibiotics.

Back home now, white cells recovered nicely, still pretty anemic. So, tired but otherwise feel fine. But most importantly ZERO cancer cells!

I meet w my main leukemia doc on 5/22 to decide whether I need further chemo.

Back home, first consolidation chemo done. Feel pretty wiped but numbers are great. Back to tracking and mixing the new record. Mostly duets w Danny Gotham, a few w full band, then each of us w a solo track or two. Here’s a demo/preview of my “solo” track. Two #lapsteel tracks, two “#acoustic #guitar tracks. A #shakti cover.

Back in for my second round of chemo. Doc said I was so far ahead of the norm in my response to the first round that he's confident two to three more rounds that I'll "never be bothered by this again."

Huge shoutout to the medical, nursing, and support staff here at Duke. Incredibly competent, professional, and supportive. I should add that they're a magnificent example of diversity.

Just a quick #leukemia update. My bloodwork has been great, showing that I’m making lots of healthy non-cancerous cells. If the trend continues I’ll hit the doc’s magic number tomorrow and go home.

After that I return in one week for a bone marrow biopsy, and a week after that I return for 5 days of inpatient consolidation chemo.

"Gypsy" is a song by British-American #rock band #FleetwoodMac. The song was written by #StevieNicks around 1979; the earliest demo recordings were made in early 1980 with #TomMoncrieff for possible inclusion on her debut solo album #BellaDonna. When Nicks' close friend Robin Anderson died of #leukemia, the song took on a new significance and Nicks dedicated the song to her in future performances. "#Gypsy" was the second single release.

Been a tough year for my health, dealt with lung #cancer where I lost half a lung. Dealt with #leukemia that gave me some nasty anemia and put me on chemo the rest of my life. With all the meds and lack of exercise my weight took off. I was starting to wonder if all this was worth it and if I should just pack it in.

Then today my daughter called me and surprised me by letting me know she is 8 months pregnant and by New Years I will be a grandpa again. She already has 2 boys, they are 12 and 8 so this one is the caboose. All I could think of when she told me was, “Yes! I have another grandchild to corrupt! This is worth sticking around for!!!” The future looks bright again.

Alright, first post time!
I'm Mog and I'm terribly awkward, but I'm trying!
I'm into:
#Videogames
and in particular #DragonsDogma
And my favourite genre of movie/game is High Fantasy.
The last two years have been dreadful thanks to a run in with #Leukemia but I'll try not to get too heavy about it.
Looking forward to getting into weird discussions, making friends and spamming anyone who follows me with screenshots and clips!
