The Baltimore Community Foundation raised money for the Maryland Tough, Baltimore Strong fund under the explicit premise that victims’ families would see some of it

On my last day of work before retirement last year I took some photos in Baltimore. This one is from the 8th floor of the parking garage facing southeast toward the harbor. In the center is Orioles Park at Camden Yards and in the background is the Francis Scott Key Bridge which is no more. It collapsed March 26, 2024 after a cargo ship struck one of the piers.

The cargo ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has been refloated and towed to port with the assistance of five tugboats. The ship, named The Dali, had been trapped under debris from the destroyed bridge since March, when the collapse killed six construction workers. CBS News has more on what’s next for the Dali and the bridge.

@easwatch #MDwx #KeyBridge #EAS for Anne Arundel County,Baltimore County,The City Of Baltimore: At 5 PM, there will be small charges used to remove part of the Key Bridge wreckage. This will create loud noises and smoke. Its a standard operation to safely cut the steel into pieces. For your safety, we recommend using hearing protection outside if you are within 2,000 yards of the site. I haven’t said much about the #keybridge collapse but I will say this: all this talk of making bridges able to withstand ship collisions is wrongheaded. What we should be focusing on is preventing ships going out of control. Had there been a couple tugs guiding that ship, or had they had a more robust power plant the crash would not have happened.

The things we take for granted…..

FBI opens criminal probe into Key Bridge collapse, raids Dali

The criminal investigation will examine, at least in part, whether the ship’s crew knew there were mechanical or electrical issues aboard the Dali before it left the Port of Baltimore three weeks ago, according to an official familiar with the investigation

This picture from the second to last press release from the Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command is just such a strange scale I had to share it:

"Response crews began removing shipping containers using a floating crane barge at the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on April 7, 2024. The Unified Command is continuing efforts in support of removing the M/V Dali, which is required to fully re-open the Fort McHenry Channel. (Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command photo.)"
