Montage Monday | Bloodywood – Rakshak (2022, India) / Prophets of Rage – s/t (2017, US) / Manic Street Preachers – The Holy Bible (1994, Wales) / Rage Against The Machine – s/t (1992, US)

Today’s spotlight is the second in our new series called “Montage Monday”, where the spotlight may be brief but is packed with a lot of music. And for no particular reason, this Montage Monday we’re going to spotlight albums spanning 30 years that have some (very well-justified) anger issues, working backward in case doing so can turn back time. One key song per album is highlighted, but titrate additional tunes/anger in as needed.

…Then Tom said "Ma, whenever ya seen a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry new born baby cries
Wherever there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me ma, I'll be there
Wherever somebody's strugglin' for a place to stand
For a decent job or a helpin' hand
Wherever somebody is strugglin' to be free
Look in their eyes ma, you'll see me"

…You'll see me, you'll see me…

Rage Against The Machine released their third album, “The Battle of Los Angeles”

I was kinda surprised that this album was so good. On par with their debut, though I’m one of those oddballs that still prefers Evil Empire. Whatever. Close enough.

That they were going this strong after a decade is truly impressive.

Favorite track is “Calm Like A Bomb”

Red Hot Chilli Peppers released their fifth LP, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”

This is their peak, imho. Which frankly isn’t saying much. It’s more funk and rock, less metal. I really enjoy a few tracks from each RHCP album, but an album’s worth has just never materialized for me.

However one feels about this album, my god does it represent 90’s alt rock perfectly. That’s both a compliment and a criticism. They got super popular which in part led to the departure of their guitarist (good for him, he was clearly stressed and self-medicating in the worst possible way).

Living Colour release their second LP, “Time's Up”

As a fan of guitar-centric music, it was inevitable that I’d love this mix of hard rock and funk with a punk attitude. Yeah, the Chili Peppers had a similar vibe, but Living Colour is on a whole other level.

The band had success with their prior album, released in 1988 and featuring the hit “Cult of Personality”. But I prefer Time’s Up. It’s got a better sound quality, more guitar virtuosity, and some of my favorite LC songs, including the title track, which is about the environment and how we’re running out of time to save it. In 1990! It also includes guest vocals from Queen Latifah, Doug E Fresh, and Little Richard!! 🎸
