About 33 & 1/3 years ago, for a class in screenwriting at De Anza College, I had this incredible instructor named Ed Azlant. He impressed me (and many) with his clear passion for teaching and his breadth and depth of knowledge and experience in many areas. Among us students was a rumor that he had had a hand in creating Rolling Stone magazine.

One idea he shared in his class was that many stories include a character who is essentially a wizard: a source of knowledge, who uses it to guide others.

As I view the series Suits and approach the end of season 3, I see a character embody the role of the wizard. Of course I had to think of Ed Azlant.

He died years ago at age 67--too young, but still enough for a very full life, and one that left me with some pretty great memories.
