Update. "The federal Department of Education [#ED] maintains an open access database of more than 2 million documents [Education Resources Information Center, #ERIC] dating back to the 1960s. It will cease operating Wednesday due to #DOGE cuts."

PS: I use many sources in my attempt to stay on top of what's happening with #OpenAccess, #OpenScience, #OpenEducation, and so on. ERIC has been one of the stalwarts.

The #ED Dept will begin collection next mo on #studentloans that're in default, incl the garnishing of wages for potentially Ms of borrowers.

Currently, ~5.3M borrowers are in default on their fed stu loans.

Many Americans with stu loans have difficulty making the payments. Biden had paused pymts & tried to term the loans. Now payments will restart under Trump.

He'd likely want delq debtors to be sent CECO, but hopefully that's off the table given the SC's dec.

When Elon Musk ordered a government-wide email blast directing federal employees to list their recent accomplishments,
most senior officials paused to consider their options.

In the Justice Department, US attorneys around the country discussed the matter over an email list they share,
with many deciding to seek more guidance before instructing career prosecutors on how to respond.
One questioned whether the email was even real.
But #Ed #Martin, an acolyte of Donald Trump named interim US attorney for the District of Columbia, charged ahead.
“It’s legit and we’ve already replied,” he told his fellow US attorneys. “Great leadership.”

Just 33 minutes after the Office of Personnel Management directive hit inboxes,
Martin urged lawyers under him to comply,
though he suggested they respond carefully.

“DOGE and Elon are doing great work!” Martin wrote in one of his frequent communiques to hundreds of assistant US attorneys and support staff.

“We are happy to be participate.”

Martin has announced investigations into his own staff for their role in January 6 cases
and has volunteered to support Attorney General Pam Bondi’s Orwellian “Weaponization Working Group,”
which purports to take aim at abuses of the justice system during the Biden administration.

Martin has threatened former special counsel Jack Smith and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
and has used X to indicate plans to investigate administration critics.

He has even tried to leverage a dubious criminal probe to seize climate grant money awarded by the Biden administration.

Okay, #BASIC is not for me. It has too many GOTOs per typical program. I have several ideas on how to handle that (macros, indentation styles, labels), but why should I care if the system itself just doesn't scale? Unlike #Lisp and #ed, there's no meta-evaluation and extension points. If I were to pick BASIC, I'd have to stay with just that—BASIC. And BASIC is not the best language by modern standards (said a passionate Lisper 😜)

NaturePrevalence of erectile dysfunction as long-COVID symptom in hospitalized Japanese patients - Scientific ReportsCoronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is associated with a wide range of post-acute sequelae. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) that developed after COVID-19 and the associated underlying factors were analyzed based on a questionnaire survey, COVID-19 Recovery Study II in Japan. A case–control study was conducted with those with or without ED one and two years hospitalized with COVID-19 between March and September 2021. Six hundred and nine Japanese men, with a median age of 48 years, were analyzed. During the study period, 116 subjects (19.0%) had erectile dysfunction. The patients with ED responded with less subjective awareness of recovery and high breathless and fatigue scores compared to those without ED. The patients with ED also showed higher Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-D (depression) and the EuroQol 5-dimensions 5-level scores for pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression scores compared before COVID-19 infection. Sleep disturbance was suggested to be associated with erectile dysfunction using an exploratory clustering analysis in the one-year survey. There were no associations of COVID-19 severity, reinfection, vaccination frequency, antiviral treatment for COVID-19 with the presence of erectile dysfunction. It was considered that mental support for the subject with erectile dysfunction as a long-COVID symptom is warranted.

Staff at the DoED received a notice Tues instructing them to leave the bldg by 6 PM & informing them that all dept offices in DC +regional offices, will be closed Wed.

Email, from J Hairfield of the Office of Sec, Facs & Logis, said the offices will be closed "for security reasons."

Staff with approved telework AGTs were told they can work from home Wed. The email instructed employees to bring their laptops home...
