ECOWAS had sanctioned #Niger for #militaryCoup after 2 #coup each in #Mali & #BurkinaFaso over past 3 years.
They started cooperating under a pact known as Alliance of #SahelStates #AES away from #West, into #Russia's arms.
After begging them not to quit, ECOWAS is ready to lift sanctions on Niger.
It had also imposed sanctions on Mali in a bid to hasten its return to constitutional order, but they were lifted in 2022

In JOINT statement, #juntas of #Niger, #Mali & #BurkinaFaso complained that instead of helping them fight security threats, #ECOWAS imposed “illegitimate, inhumane & irresponsible” sanctions when the 3 countries staged COUPS “to take their destiny into their own hands” 
They created their own #AllianceOfSahelStates (ASS)
#Russian mercenary group #Wagner was already in Mali. Russia & Niger officials have also recently hosted each other.
