My wife and I were sitting at a bistro's bar and chatting with the young bartender - a philosophy grad student. We had a decent conversation, but one thing bothered me. The student dissed on Jacques Derrida, saying he's a "one trick pony." I got the impression that Derrida is out of fashion in philosophy depts these days. Not surpising. Philosophy depts have always been sites of fashion. Anyway, I don't believe that student knows much of Derrida's ideas.

A fascinating talk by philosopher John D. Caputo on true #religion. Caputo has been deeply informed by the thinking of Jacques #Derrida and the idea of #deconstruction, etc, etc. Caputo's books "The Prayers and Tears of Jacques Derrida" (1997) and "What Would Jesus Deconstruct?: The Good News of Postmodernism for the Church" (2007) have helped me quite a lot in confronting the #faith of my youth.

[from a thread touching on the linguistic turn in modern Anglo-American phil:]

I'm not expert, but associate the linguistic turn with analytic #philosophy, and #Derrida in effect with being in position of "interrogating" that current of thought.

I'm personally interested in those experiences too immediate for words, as explored in #contemplative and #meditative traditions (and touched on in the book, *Derrida and Negative Theology*).

A favorite passage from 4th c. theologian Gregory of Nyssa:

I have looked for a #pipe like the one in the image below. I finally found one but it's $280. Ugh. 😕

Anyway, that's Jacques #Derrida's hands holding the pipe and talking about when he just stays in his pajamas all day until he has to go out, but he had to get dressed because the film crew was there, thus making the film a lie. 😄

The image is from the 2002 documentary, also called DERRIDA.

Are there any other Ali Smith enthusiasts out here? Back at the beginning of #COVID (requisite reminder that COVID is *not* over), my Aunt got me into a #BookClub that over a year, read all of her novels in chronological order. As a result, I now think of Ali Smith as one of the leading public intellectuals coming out of Britain. She's fucking brilliant. If I ever do really get to go back to university, I could see myself writing a thesis relating her work to #Derrida.
