Today, in my Animals and the Environment module, we discussed utilitarianism and animal agriculture. I got my students to create handouts during the seminar explaining the two readings I gave them: Singer’s ‘All Animals are Equal’ and Zangwill’s ‘Our Moral Duty to Eat Meat’. I can’t say they found either paper compelling, but their handouts were really good. Quote from the day from one student: ‘It’s making me think, I don’t like it.’ #animalethics #philosophy #animalrights
I’m not convinced seemingly trivial language changes like this meaningfully impact animal welfare. But I’m open to being convinced! Any good research looking into this question?

What could go wrong with such interference in a #natural process? Also, is it #ethical to mislead another #species this way?

#Introduction I'm Jonathan. I've got a whole lot of interests that flow from the basic ideas that; suffering and exploitation are bad, happiness and morphological freedom/freedom in general are good, that the above applies to all sentient beings, and that there are a lot of things we can and should do about that.
Moved from Mastodon.lol to veganism.social.

Finally found out how to follow hashtags and starting to feel like I'm getting the hang of this. So, time for a re-#introduction: I work in #philosophy, where I specialise in #AnimalCognition, #AnimalEthics, #AnimalBehavior, #PhilosophyOfAnimalMinds. I work interdisciplinarily and aim to be in a dialogue with folks from #Ethology and #ComparativePsychology. I'm also interested in #BehavioralEcology, #Evolution, #AnimalWelfare, #AnimalStudies, and all things #Science. Happy to be here! :)
