On this day in 1969 the '60's ended. The Altamont Speedway Free Concert. The Hells Angels were hired as security by the management of the Rolling Stones, on the recommendation of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane (who both had previously used the Angels for security at performances without incident), for $500 worth of beer. The violence resulted in the murder of Meredith Hunter, while one person was struck by a vehicle and another drown in an irrigation canal.
Recommended viewing "Gimme Shelter" the 1970 film by Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin chronicling the last week of the Stones' tour.
