Wilmer Fields played for a lot of great Homestead Grays teams ... but he didn't play for the squad that many #baseball historians now argue was the greatest of all time. Bar none. And let's have no grumbling from the also-rans. (Talking to you, '27 Yankees.)

Which Grays team was that?

FIELDS OUTDUELS PAIGE

Pirates outscored 18-9 in this series, but they took the rubber game thanks to a superb performance from Wilmer Fields (CG, 8 Ks).

All came down to the last at-bat: McQuinn thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run!

Big #1947League matchup today: Wilmer Fields (10-7, 2.92, .267, 11 HR, 20 3B) and his Pirates take on Satchel Paige (9-7, 4.07) and the New York Yankees in the third and deciding game of their series. Let's head out to Yankee Stadium now...

Answer to #1947League question: Willard Brown was 32 when he played for the St. Louis Browns in July of '47.

In later years, he appears to have fibbed about the year of his birth so as to suggest that his short stay in the AL was due to his age.

It wasn't. It was because humans don't perform well in environments like this:

YANKS STORM BACK, TAKE GAME 2 FROM PIRATES

Willard Brown (HOF) posted a jaw-dropping 5-6 day (3 2B, HR, 3R, 3 RBI) as the Yankees dominated. Starter Spud Chandler picked up his tenth win of the year. And hit a grand slam.

If it had been a fight, they'd've stopped it.

BUCS TOP YANKS

NY gets a quality start from Morris, outhits Pirates 10-5, but can't connect the dots in any inning until the 9th, when a two-out rally delivered too little, too late. Willard Brown's 3 doubles go to waste.

R.T. Walker gets the W for Pittsburgh; Kiner homers.

Aaand I'm back. Thanks for the patience in the clubhouse as I handled some self-care issues. #1947League back online soon. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

My beloved Oakland A's had gone 515 games without a complete game ... and then ... last night ... ESTES! :-)

#1947League ERA leaders.

Admittedly, Brooklyn's Chet Brewer had an insane first half, but he just barely squeaked by on the IP required to qualify for this, and the Dodgers are so deep with great relievers they log fewer CGs than other clubs. He may not be there at the end. We'll see.

On to the pitchers: #1947League wins leaders.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wins don't accurately reflect a pitcher's capacity to contribute to a team's success. Quality starts, ERA+, FIP, etc: all much more meaningful.

But: Garnett Blair, Ralph Branca, and Bob Romby are all badasses.
