Seeing all the write-ups about the end of the Billy Joel residency at MSG, I’m reminded that he hosted the single most disappointing concert I ever attended. Joel was absolutely hammered, slurred through the same stories and jokes between songs, repeated parts of the setlist, and openly criticized his own fans, calling us “simpletons” for enjoying his pop songs instead of more challenging music. Took all the shine off an artist I’d respected. (Elton was on the same bill and he was PISSED OFF.)

@Rosey wow, when was that?!

@Phreba Sometime in the early 2000s. Elton and Billy called it the Face to Face tour.

@Rosey @Phreba I went to two shows from those tours a few years apart and thankfully both were amazingly good.

@nikres @Phreba I'm not trying to knock on a guy who's obviously had some issues with the bottle. He probably had good days/months/years and bad, back then. From what I read this AM, he's sober now, which is good.

@Rosey @Phreba I didn’t take it that way, and I’ve also seen some bad performances due to substance issues (Amy Winehouse and Scott Weiland both come to mind). Unfortunately that tends to happen all too much.

@nikres @Phreba I've heard similar stories about both of them. It crushes me that I never saw Amy live, because she was so uniquely talented.

I did see Weiland, but it was after STP with Velvet Revolver and I spent most of the show wishing it was GnR or STP instead.

Anyway, fuck opiates.

@Rosey @Phreba I saw STP and he was great. Then I saw his solo show with the Wildabouts, and I was very glad I got a free ticket from the opener as I was part of a mass exodus about 5-6 songs in cuz he was so bad.

As far as Amy, I wasn’t a fan, but it was a festival so figured I’d check it out (as I did still respect the talent) and it was terrible. I know she had on and off days, and that was definitely an off day.

@Rosey What a wild story!

I hate to say this but Dylan was mine. Seeing him live - and while he had a crack band - I wasn’t sure what 95% of the material even was.
