@FlashMobOfOne Definitely feeling that vibe. Bunch of whiny brats blaming their careers fading on all the…
…publicity and fame they got.
Ok, sure.
@chopaganda @FlashMobOfOne my wife re read the article and said that 1) it was *really* mean, 2) Estevez and the other central figures did come off like total pricks, and 3) Mccarthy was barely in it.
Most notable to me was that Mccarthy thought everyone young thought they were cool; my friends all thought they were Reagan Youth yuppie cokehead clowns. And just a brief mention of race, nothing about the overt racism, and nothing on the insane misogyny? Literal date rape as comedy?
@chopaganda @FlashMobOfOne this whole Saint John Hughes thing is garbage. Some of his big brat pack movies stink (yes, breakfast club is largely good) and the way women are treated in some can't be handwaved away. I appreciated that Molly Ringwald wrote about some of that recently, and wasn't surprised she declined to join the party.
Guru Demi Moore was cool though. And Ally Sheedy still seems like a dope person.

Had Hughes lived, he absolutely would have been a Scott Adams, James Woods, "My Pillow Guy"-level Trumper. There is no doubt about this.
@Kshawn @mrcompletely @FlashMobOfOne I dunno. While I can’t defend a lot of his work when viewed through the lens of today, the understanding of sexual assault was fundamentally different back then. And on race, his movies were set in white suburbia which was a race bubble.
Was he ever confronted on these issues later in life?
@chopaganda @mrcompletely @FlashMobOfOne
It’s not based on his work per se, but I definitely remember reading about how he was an avid republican who regularly complained about how Hollywood was “too liberal” and unwilling to accept conservative opinions , which makes me think he was very likely on the glide path to MAGA-dom.
@chopaganda @Kshawn @FlashMobOfOne I don't think Hughes was all bad any more than I think he was a saint, but even me and my idiot friends at the time knew that sometimes his films were actively racist especially in portrayal of Asians, and that some of the stuff with women/girls was just fucking creepy and gross. So saying it was of its time doesn't really work for me. I was of its time and we talked about it then, and while not everyone had a problem with it, plenty did
@chopaganda @Kshawn @FlashMobOfOne I'm not saying throw it on the fire or no one can enjoy the movies. I'm just saying if you're talking about those movies you can't just ignore it like the doc did
