I was in an AAPI group meeting and the ice breaker question was, what fruit sums up your life this year? I said I was a mango.

That even though the best of me is supposed to be in the summer I still exist now out of season. Out of spite.

This summer was horrible (I lost my job and my baby dog of 15 years), but it did also usher in a new season of life for me. I’m very thankful to have landed on my feet, and more. But looking forward to next summer again.

@skinnylatte Thank you for sharing! The only mangos I have had that were not from Mexico were those I devoured every day when I lived in Thailand. I love mangos! Do you know of the author Michael Pollan? Your writing on mangos reminds me of his book, The Botany of Desire. In three sections he goes into the fascinating details and histories of apples, tulips and marijuana. You should approach him about a second volume and write the mango portion!

@2dogphish thanks! I love his work!!

Thai mangoes are quite good, Indian and Pakistani and Burmese mangoes are divine. I hope you can try them some time!

@skinnylatte Well thank you for writing about all those mangos I knew nothing about! I’m going to start with your links to sources and figure out what I can get in SLC, UT of all places-will be a fun food hunt challenge! Serendipitous to read your piece, as I was posting about my deep love of Indian food.
