Cassander
TLDR: Windows Activation Servers are currently broken with no ETA for resolution or workaround.

Well this is fun. I updated my BIOS last night, and it was a big enough change to break activation on my Windows 11 Pro install. That's fine, it's a digital license, reactivation should qui... Hrm. Error.

Try again. Error. Reboot. Error. Request a callback from Microsoft Support.

This is where things get really fun. The Microsoft Support Agent last night told me that Windows 7 licenses that were upgraded to Windows 11 were expiring and would not activate any more. I might have called her a liar, and asked to speak with her manager.

The Microsoft Support Manager said the same thing: Windows 11 licenses that were upgrades from Windows 7/8 were no longer valid for activation. Even if they were now digital licenses tied to my Microsoft account.

I figured I'd have better luck later with a fresh call center, so I tried again today. Still getting the same activation errors, even going through the "I recently changed hardware and need to reactivate Windows" Pick-Your-Device window.

This time I got a Microsoft Support Agent who understood it was a digital license, and did some investigation. She reported that there was a known problem with the Windows Activation servers right now, and there were "lots" of calls to Windows Support over the issue. I'm "scheduled" for a callback from a technician, who will either help with the issue or collect more data? I'm not clear.

The same Microsoft Support Agent also indicated that there is currently no workaround for the activation issues. So I guess I just don't get to customize anything, and hope that nothing important breaks (more).

What an embarrassing situation. Microsoft, this is a shitshow and you know it.

Is there anyone from Microsoft on the Fediverse who should be tagged for this?

TLDR: Windows Activation Servers are currently broken with no ETA for resolution or workaround.

#Microsoft #Windows11 #WindowsActivation #Error0x803F7001 #SLUI #LicenseActivation #Error0xC004F2121
