Hi it's Kylie 🫀<p>Anybody have any experience converting a physical Win2000 install to virtual? I'm stuck on inaccessible boot device and a lot of the resources on the Internet are dead links. Trying to preserve whatever was on this old drive. This seems like a driver issue but I don't really know.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/qemu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>qemu</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maxtor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>maxtor</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/windows2000" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>windows2000</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/crayola" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>crayola</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/p2v" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>p2v</span></a></p>
Pete Orrall<p>I have a <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Windows2000" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Windows2000</span></a> disc laying around. It's time to use it as my daily driver.</p><p>What could go wrong?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homelab</span></a></p>
movq<p>I’m developing an irrational affection for <a href="https://tilde.zone/tags/Windows2000" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Windows2000</span></a>. 🫤 Especially the Explorer (of all things …). It hit a sweet spot between simplicity and features. (And it was awful in many regards, but we’re going to ignore that.)</p><p>Win2k was also the last Windows <em>before</em> that “product activation” nonsense. That was the point where the complete enshittification of everything began, imho.</p><p>The closest thing to Explorer that we have on Linux/BSD might be <a href="http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">XFE</a> – without the integration into the rest of the system, obviously.</p><p>(Other similar file managers like PCManFM also still exist, although they have adopted the current ultra flat UI even more than XFE.)</p><p><a href="https://tilde.zone/tags/Retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Retrocomputing</span></a></p>
Mike<p>PSA for users of Windows 2000: don't forget to update your regional options for two digit year parsing! We're fast approaching the default of 2029.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/Windows2000" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Windows2000</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a></p>

The "recall" feature is just another evolution of the enshittification of their software.</p><p>The last decent OS that company released was <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Windows2000" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Windows2000</span></a>. No, it wasn't as secure as they claimed it but at least it didn't require an active internet connection for the license key, didn't require activation, didn't phone home, didn't require a mandatory sign-in with a Microsoft email address. And finally its specs weren't artificially jacked up to require someone to buy a new PC just to run an OS (this contributing to more e-waste).</p>
