Bobbing Boat<p>1700s canal engineers tried various weir designs. This one's circular. Excess water flowed down the channel and over the perfectly horizontal ring of bricks, to drain away.</p><p>Sadly, this is part of an orphaned section of canal that is now fallow.<br>Happily, there's a group of Lichfield volunteers rebuilding this canal and its locks, to reconnect it to the Birmingham Canal Network. It'll take years because two roads were built across the land.</p><p><a href="https://poweredbygay.social/tags/CanalLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanalLife</span></a> <a href="https://poweredbygay.social/tags/weir" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weir</span></a> <a href="https://poweredbygay.social/tags/canal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canal</span></a> <a href="https://poweredbygay.social/tags/water" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>water</span></a> <a href="https://poweredbygay.social/tags/boating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boating</span></a> <a href="https://poweredbygay.social/tags/narrowboat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>narrowboat</span></a> <a href="https://poweredbygay.social/tags/UK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UK</span></a></p>
BenI was lured out by the sun this morning, but very quickly clouds raced in. Still, once on the bike, it's harder to start than to stop. Quickly grabbed a still scene from the weir at Beeston Lock overlooking the Witches Steps in the distance, where the sun gave a final mirroring performance. <a href="https://pixelfed.de/discover/tags/cycling?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#cycling</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.de/discover/tags/beeston?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#beeston</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.de/discover/tags/weir?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#weir</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.de/discover/tags/landscape?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#landscape</a>
Brendan Casey 🇮🇪🥦🚴🇪🇺<p><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/NBD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NBD</span></a> Today, I finally picked up my 60th birthday present to myself (it was last October!), a North Road Cycles Grav-i-Ti. I got the tram down to Sale Moor and rode Nollaig back via the gravel/rocks/sand/cobbles tracks that run alongside the River Mersey, from Sale Moor to Stockport. Then onto tarmac for the last 9km home. Of course, it got filthy so had its first wash later in the afternoon, too! </p><p><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/BikeTooter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BikeTooter</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/BikeToot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BikeToot</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/NorthRoadCycles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NorthRoadCycles</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/GraviTi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GraviTi</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/Nollaig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nollaig</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/titanium" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>titanium</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/gravel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gravel</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/RiverMersey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RiverMersey</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/weir" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weir</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/river" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>river</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/eire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eire</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/ireland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ireland</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/cycling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cycling</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/OutsideIsFree" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OutsideIsFree</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/FromWhereIRide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FromWhereIRide</span></a></p>

Mike Babyak<p>Daily <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/SteveKimock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SteveKimock</span></a>. I got to hang w Steve before this 2007 show with <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/Ratdog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ratdog</span></a> in Camden. As he always does, he took me out on stage to show me the guitars and amps that he was using. As I’m standing there holding one of his guitars <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/Weir" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Weir</span></a> and the rest of the band suddenly came rushing on to the stage and launched into some music. Clare, Ireland, 1.5km from the nearest dryland. Fish dropping down with the ebbing tide were guided into the point of the weir, where they were trapped by baskets and nets. At low tide each day fisherman came by boat to build &amp; repair the weirs and remove the catch.<br>Lots more detail at <a href="https://www.ucd.ie/news/2011/02FEB11/180211-Secrets-of-Irish-medieval-fishing-site-will-be-lost-to-the-tide.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">ucd.ie/news/2011/02FEB11/18021</span><span class="invisible">1-Secrets-of-Irish-medieval-fishing-site-will-be-lost-to-the-tide.html</span></a>. <br>/1</p>
