Looking for CMS advice

Hey Web devs!

Do you have any suggestions, tips, opinions, dos, don’ts about headless CMSes?

I have a growing list of small/mid non-profits and collectives asking for my help to (re)make their website. I totally want to help, but I don’t have much time, especially considering that they generally have little or no funding—I would most definitely point them to @VillageOneCoop, otherwise.

Therefore, I want a super simple and replicable solution where I can copy-paste most of the code, while providing them with a stable, fast, and modern solution. I had a look at the Headless CMS section in the Jamstack website, but I need opinions from people who actually used some of that software already.

Needs

  • I want to code and configure everything using @eleventy
  • Admin interface (#WebApp) for the client to add pages and write posts
  • Static website in the front-end
  • Simple and reliable CI/CD
  • No/minimal maintenance after the first setup
  • Self-hostable (I was taking this for granted so much that I forgot to write it)
  • #OpenSource

Nice to have

  • Possibly using #Deno, not #NodeJS
  • Allowing the client to customize a bit their website through the admin interface, with a GUI
  • CMS app packaged on @yunohost
  • No CMS vendor lock-in
  • I’d love to write as little JavaScript as possible
  • #FreeSoftware

Absolutely not

Please, boost this and ask around! Links to videos, tutorials, and resources are welcome.

People whose perspective I would really value: @zachleat @harryfk @deno_land @jaredwhite @vanillaweb @stefan @mxbck @WeirdWriter @deadsuperhero (Sorry if I am spamming you!)

I am once again faced with the bleak irony of people who like to code in the terminal with Vim or Nano, but also install onto their computer some 5 or 10 apps via FlatPak or Docker, including VSCode, each installed with their own entire copies of Node.js and Electron.js (differing only in their minor revision number), while also complaining about Emacs being “bloated” because it ships with a miniature web browser and fully-featured e-mail client.

A feature request I'd like to file if I can find the submit spot for #mastodon

…while we can click "Hide" on an image tht someone posts, there doesn't seem to be a way to hide the images in a news link, or website link.

What are those called now? They used to be called TwitterCards in the old place I think.

It's unpleasant to have to see pics of you-know-who or his cronies in your feed even though I *do* want to keep seeing the news toots.

nodds in agreement

  • I think having a proper #API is a way to facilitate that, cuz worst-case one just slaps together some #aliases in #bash, #fish, #zsh or whatever #shell and just uses #curl to query stuff manually as this solves the whole #WebApp - issue.

And I do prefer #FLOSS as it works fine for an ever increasing audience!

  • Even if we choose to point at bad #UX / #UI combos like #GnuPG, we've to also acknowledge better existing alternatives like #enc that just work!

Personally, I think that everything people are expected to use if not forced to use should be #OpenSource as licensed in a #OSI accredited license and be released with #SourceCode and #documentation to make #reproduceableBuilds and thus facilitate #audits by truly independent parties...

  • And if that's not possible any requirement to using said things should be outlawed no matter the context!

A unsarcastically good example is #S3, even tho I hate #amazon, they wanted #developers to integrate their #ObjectStorage which necessitated an #open source'd API to the point that it's #backend is inherently reproduceable, and now every halfassing #Webhoster offers S3 #storage, sometimes with bit & second-precise billing.

@enigmatico @lispi314 @kimapr @bunnybeam case in point:

  • #Bloatedness was the original post topic and yes, due to #TechBros "#BuildFastBreakThings" mentality, #Bloatware is increasing given that a shitty bloated 50+MB "#WebApp" with like nw.js is easy to slap together (and yes I did so myself!) than to put in way more thought and effort (as you can see on the slow progression of OS/1337...

  • Yes, #Accessibility is something that needs to be taken more seriously and it's good to see that there's at least some attemots at making #accessibility mandatory (at least in #Germany, where I know from some insider that a big telco is investing a lot in that!) for a growng number of industries and websites...

  • And whilst one can slap an #RTX5090 on any laptop that has a fully-functional #ExpressCard slot (with #PCIe interface, using some janky adaptors!) that'll certainly not make sense beyond some #CUDA or other #GPGPU-style workloads as it's bottlenecked to a single PCIe lane of 2.0 (500MB/s) or just 1.0a(250MB/s) speeds.

Needless to say there is a need to THINN DOWN things cuz the current speed of #Enshittifcation and bloatedness combined with #AntiRepairDesign and overpriced yet worse #tech in general makes it unsustainable for an ever increasing population!

  • Not everyone wants (or even can!) indebt themselves just to have a phone or laptop!

Should we aim for more "#FrugslComputing"?

  • Abdolutely!

Is it realistic to expect things to be in a perfectly accessible TUI that ebery screenreader can handle?

  • No!

That being said the apathy of consumers is real, and very frustrating:

People get nudged into accepting all the bs and it really pisses me off because they want me to look like ab outsider / asshole for not submitting to #consumerism and #unsustainable shite...

ぷにすきーENIGMATICO :flag_bisexual: :flag_nonbinary: (@enigmatico)I get this is a joke, but here is the thing (aside of the joke). People doesnt use crappy laptops anymore. People moves on to phones/tablets, or if they want something more serious, something like a gamer PC. Most people will buy a console if they want to play games though. In that context, nobody cares anymore about bloat. If you are a developer its easier for you to use some bloaty framework that gets the job done in a couple days, because at the end of the day, if you're going to be exploited and crunched to death, you might as well make it as short as possible. And as a consumer, nobody really cares. You buy whatever allows you to do what you wwant and thats it. Or whatever your pocket allows you. And to be completely honest with you all, this has always been like this. You have to do with what you have. Could the world be better if everyone used pure C and assembly? Maybe... if companies had the intention to spend years developing ttheir products and fixing critical bugs before launch. By the time of the launch they would be obsolete. Kinda what happen to Duke Nukem Forever. RN: (📎1)
