Maude Nificent<p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Watching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Watching</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Traitors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Traitors</span></a> — this seems to be a popular name for TV series, <br>so to be clear — here i’m talking about an UK drama mini-series of 6 episodes, on Netflix in australia, released in 2019</p><p>synopsis: A British civil servant agrees to spy on her own government for the Americans in the aftermath of WWII.</p><p>spy stories are rarely my jam: i’ve never understood the <<my country right or wrong>> mentality, and i don’t assume strangers deciding whom to sacrifice *for the greater good* will always make the right choice or for the right reason.</p><p>did the little spy vs spy margin drawings in early mad magazines shape my views, or was it years of Sister Boresya droning on and on in the 1960s about how communists smuggle secrets in and out of australia using teeny tiny microdots on cigarette packets? 🤔<br>ultimately i prefer to take each case on its merits rather than pick a side. capitalism sux, but so did soviet central planning, and really, are we not now at the mercy of corporate planning committees? e.g. big pharma hardly has an interest in even pretending to give a shit about the proletariat. <br>as for despots, neither ideology — capitalism or communism — has been able to save us from those.<br>——-</p><p>all that said, i enjoyed this show about an era when people in the west were still deciding whether politics should go left or right. After WWII the right were focused on a fear of stalin’s version of communism, and deluded about the possibility of keeping a lid on nuclear weapon science.</p><p>the main character in this show, Feef Symonds, tries to work out whether she should be blue, or pink, or red for the sake of England, and through her story we encounter various people with different points of view. </p><p>reviews tell me this series has been panned largely for a lack of historical accuracy or analysis (especially of the Palestine issue). This is not a series *about* history; it’s just a series that introduces different points of view. Left is pitted against right, working class against upper class, the individual’s welfare against the greatest good, and so on. All the main characters are complex and interesting, and the social history, at least, seems reasonably accurate.</p><p>half a dozen times i found myself recording small scenes on my phone because some ideas, tho not startlingly new to me, were expressed with delightful clarity. </p><p>e.g.</p><p><< no one can sign off on half the shit their country does. You guys scooped up India and Africa just cos you wanted them. We took out Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is the world. It’s fucking ugly. The question isn’t “are you proud of your country?” but are you proud of yourself? Are you doing everything you can to make the world a better place?>></p><p>in a later scene when I a character said <<I don’t serve a foreign power, I serve an idea>> I couldn’t help but wonder if the facts of her life supported the claim.</p><p>Traitors is not high hollywood drama, but it’s well made, and well written, and i enjoyed it.</p>

Maude Nificent<p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/YourFriendsAndNeighbours" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>YourFriendsAndNeighbours</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Watching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Watching</span></a><br>apple tv, 9 episodes </p><p>synopsis - A hedge fund manager resorts to burglary after losing his job, targeting wealthy neighbors to maintain his family's lifestyle, but makes a fateful error breaking into the wrong home.</p><p>in 1977 jane fonda and george segal made a movie called <fun with dick and jane> that had a laugh at the social determinism of a capitalist, consumerist culture. man gets job, man gets mortgage, man gets promotion, wife spends money, man loses job. there are some good moments in the story — esp. when the rich arsehole father in law refuses to help dick and tells him being fired is a wonderful opportunity… guy standing had not yet written about the *Precariat* as a new economic class, but the class has always existed, even in the land of the free</p><p>so, what would make me care about a new show where some rich knob loses his job and turns to a life of crime? could i sympathise at all? the theme of social determinism is explored in a more subtle way in this series, but it’s still there. the main story is filled out with some interesting sub-plots: a murder charge, a boss who is a different type of arsehole, a different family dynamic, and an interesting sister. </p><p>the series is well made and, while it is hardly thought provoking or profound in any way, i enjoyed it because it seems to have decent values (given the storyline).</p><p>i found it easy to sympathise with the main character, and i liked the rational way he and his wife parented their children</p>

The stories themselves are not that scary, but the actors are more than capable as Aya Cash gives you your money's(!) worth as a horror writer in a contest she might win, but lose a lot more in the process.<br>Scare me/you?
