Steve's Place<p>So I had this bug. I could not understand why two identical pieces of code, one a child of the other, with 1 variable's worth of difference (except for a mesh), behaved differently. The parent class worked. What was up with the child? The variable was not referenced prior to the failure.</p><p>I tried creating it again.</p><p>I tried creating it brute-force by recreating the class.</p><p>I tried everything I could think of, including stopping and starting the editor. Including deleting saved and intermediate files, plus the DDC.</p><p>Today I just did what I did when I tried creating it again (3 paragraphs above). It worked.</p><p>Clearly, the editor needed a nap.</p><p>C++ is magical code.</p><p>What are the next parts of the incantation? Oh, yes. I remember them now.</p><p>Save. Stop the editor. Make a backup. Steve's Place<p>I decided to move 900 GB of ugly UE files into storage. It's not going to finish until PGE raises the cost of electricity out of sight for 4 hours, so I shan't be running the Unreal Engine editor (until 9pm). Worry not. Evenings, weekends, and holidays have cheap rates on this plan, and I am usually a night owl.</p><p>No solar panels, but I'm saving around 11%/month over standard rates. Occasionally more than that. It's still too expensive, imho, but in America we subsidize the rich, not the public good.</p><p>I'm rolling my own RTS and will do the same for the RPG. If I'm rewriting swaths of code, I may as well just write it all from scratch so I have a better idea of what the programmer was thinking when they wrote abominable subroutine A.</p><p>"Oh. That was me. Curses on me."</p><p>I might be able to salvage the RPG, but the RTS was too buggy with internal errors from ancient crashes I had nothing to do with.</p><p>I'd like to release one of these.
