Senator Paula Simons🇨🇦
Wonderful news for Edmonton's AI mage Rich Sutton, for the University of Alberta, and for AMII, the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. I've had a couple of chances over the years to interview Rich and his colleagues, and tour their labs. Their work on reinforcement learning - far more interesting than LLM - has made Edmonton a real AI centre of excellence. Meeting him is the closest I'll ever come to meeting Gandalf. https://www.ualberta.ca/en/folio/2025/03/computing-science-professor-wins-turing-award.html #yeg #Edmonton #ualberta #TuringAward #Turing #AI

Chuck Darwin
Since Redbox went bankrupt, many have wondered what will happen to those red kiosks and DVDs.
Another question worth examining is: What will happen to all the data stored inside the Redboxes?
Redbox parent company Chicken Soup for the Soul filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in June and is in the process of liquidating its assets.
Meanwhile, stores with Redboxes are eager to remove the obsolete hardware.
And tinkerers have reported getting their hands on Redbox kiosks and doing all sorts of things with them, including running Doom.
But Redboxes falling into technologists' hands can also result in the uncovering of customer data from kiosks' hard drives.
As spotted by Lowpass today, programmer and expert reverse engineer #Foone #Turing reported via Mastodon that she was able to retrieve records for 2,471 transactions from the disk image of a Redbox hard drive.
Turing told Ars Technica that she got the image from a Discord channel:
[The Redbox] logged lots of information, including debugging information from the transaction terminal, and they left old records on the device.

This probably saved them some time on QAing software bugs, but it exposed all their users to data being leaked.

Data went back "to at least 2015," Turing said on Mastodon. Space Hobo
Alan Turing didn't have our modern boolean circuit notations, so he described circuits by the minimum number of high input lines required to trigger an output. You can almost see it as a neural net rather than logical gates, except when the ≢ sign appears for XOR. The lines with zeroes written over the node outlines are inhibitors.

The semicircles are delays measured in bits, which (as this was a serial machine) can achieve all sorts of shifting and rotation operations. The rectangles are delay lines (mercury tanks designed by Tommy Flowers at the Post Office research centre in Dollis Hill), and the number inside indicates the number of bits cycling around (although in some pages it's the number of 32-bit words, confusingly). Smaller delay lines could buffer a word for combination in a future operation.

The image here is a page from The Logical Design of the Pilot Model ACE, by J.H.
