Mayor David NewmanI am happy for everyone who graduated today from California Lutheran University but none more so than first-gen grad Wilbert Ac. Wilbert grew up on Warwick Avenue, witnessing firsthand the devastating effects that gangs, violence, and drugs had on his family. Volunteering with Safe Passage Youth Foundation, he turned away from a “bad path” and instead began helping others in his community. Wilfred’s work at the Conejo Community Center earned him the city’s first Community Commitment Award from then-mayor Claudia Bill-de la Peña.Today Wilbert completed his studies at CLU and faces a bright future. Mayor David NewmanToday marks a proud and hopeful milestone for the City of Thousand Oaks with the opening of the Thrive Grove Navigation Center, which uses tiny homes to provide temporary housing and wraparound services for unhoused residents. The people of Thousand Oaks asked us to address homelessness, and today we made good on that request. Positions are based on the city's best interests, not on personal beliefs. For example, while I have concerns as a civil libertarian about ALPR data retention and potential abuse, I also recognize that police investigations often take longer than 30 days. Mayor David NewmanToday I signed letters expressing the city's support for six state bills involving wildfire preparedness, emergency relief, short-term rentals, and alcohol and drug treatment centers. Working with our partners at @calcities, which lobbies on behalf of all of the state’s 400+ cities, we hope to see all six proposals enacted into law.
