My camera shoots fascists<p>Yesterday I found an alligator lizard covered in ticks. Blech! I got a tweezers and picked them off and let it go, but then I looked it up and learned the craziest thing:</p><p>Something in alligator lizards' and spiny lizards' blood makes the ticks gut inhospitable to the spirochete that causes Lyme disease. That means a Lyme-infected tick gets sterilized of Lyme organisms by feeding a lizard blood!</p><p>HFS that's so cool! I'm going to read a bunch of papers on it and write a blog post. Forest Fern Friend<p>Found my first tick ever on my dog tonight, and I am mortified! Egad. I was able to fully remove the tick as evident in its crawling when I set it down. Egad x2. I treated the bite with rubbing alcohol and then packed it with antibiotic ointment. Science Updates<p>Scientists may have developed a faster, better way to diagnose the infection, which was just as good as the current approach after comparative testing. The findings have been reported in Nat. Colin Purrington<p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added CATNIP OIL and OIL OF CITRONELLA to its list of *registered*, skin-applied chemicals that repel mosquitoes, joining DEET, IR 3535, PMD (oil of lemon eucalyptus), picaridin, and 2-undecanone.
