Les studios #LookingGlass c'était #UltimaUnderworld, #SystemShock, #Thief... et puis #TerraNova, infiniment moins culte et sans doute à raison. Il y avait là tout de même un petit quelque chose de fascinant, dans ces maps gigantesques qu'on parcourait en mecha pour accomplir sa mission, donnant l'impression qu'on avait une liberté d'approche totale. Je sais que quelques mois avant #Daggerfall ça m'avait donné des vibes d'open world assez vertigineuses.

Quand on croise les CV de Warren Spector et d'Harvey Smith (plus connu désormais pour #Dishonored), on trouve des noms prestigieux : #SystemShock, #DeusEx (1 et 2), #Thief (3)... Et puis il y a #Cybermage, doom-like cyberpunk (mon premier contact avec le genre) dans un monde semi-ouvert, ou en tout cas un hub central, une petite ville dans laquelle on peut se balader, conduire, voler... Ce serait malhonnête de dire que ça préfigure #DeusEx mais à l'époque ce #jeuvideo très moyen m'avait fasciné.

Stayed up until 2 AM enjoying the #SystemShock beta.
Here’s another thing I love:
There aren’t many “setpieces.” There aren’t many cinematics.
There’s just methodical exploration, problem solving and adrenaline-pumping moments of combat. The intensity is created entirely through atmosphere and the tension of being completely outgunned and under-resourced.
And the non-linear continuity! You can go back and forth endlessly between levels (so far). The station is just opening up to me now.

The atmosphere, the setting, the exploration… it’s a blast. I love a fucked up space station.

As throwbacks go this one is instructive:
#SystemShock has me noticing just how many modern games are Splash Mountain With Gunplay.
One of the core gameplay systems here is the sprawling geography of the station. You have to develop a sense of navigation in order to succeed. Instead of riding a rail, you’re poking around and exploring and that’s part of the fun.
I miss that and wish it were more common.
