KayTrees make patient subjects. Especially when they stand alone. It’s then that one can see them as individuals - shaped by time, full of character. In forests, I struggle. I lose the tree in the crowd of trees. And it’s the same with people. KaySometimes I find myself walking the same paths, literally and creatively. This isn’t the same scene. Not the same trees, not the same place. But it looks remarkably similar to an image I posted just over two weeks ago. Creativity doesn’t always mean breaking new ground. Sometimes it’s circling back, revisiting, refining. Sometimes it’s about finding comfort in repetition, noticing how subtle changes - in light, mood, or me - can make the familiar feel different. So here I am, again. Similar light, similar darkness, similar pull. But not the same. KayA touch of color, anyone? I often edit a photo, feel briefly content, and release it into the world - knowing full well that it’s wiser to let it sit, breathe a little, and return with clearer eyes. Preferably the next day. Ideally the next week. Sometimes I look back just 24 hours later and wonder what possessed me. I’ve had posts age faster than milk. This might be another one. KaySince switching from Windows to Linux and from Lightroom to darktable, my setup is no longer properly color-managed. It used to be - back on Windows everything was reasonably calibrated. But in the end, maybe it doesn’t really matter. Or more precisely: maybe it never did. Or rather: it’s hopeless. Lighting conditions vary. Most of your screens likely aren’t color-managed or adapted to your current environment. And then there’s everything else - biology, psychology, mood. Truth is, we’ll never all see exactly the same image. But perhaps that’s not a flaw - it’s the point. A space for different ways of seeing. Just as a sculptor starts with raw stone, I start with a RAW file: a block of digital potential. KayRecently observed from the edge of a field. Probably a swallow hunting insects. Beautiful how sharply and swiftly they dart and weave above the field. I wasn't prepared and have no clue anyway how to photograph fast-moving objects. This was the only shot where you can even somewhat identify a bird. KayFrom the series: Germans Abroad - Bread Edition Even at maximum possible distance from home (exhibit A: Lake Wanaka), the common German can’t suppress the deep, existential longing for proper bread. Without authentic bakery bread, he resorts to emergency measures - pumpernickel - while dreaming vividly of crispy seeded rolls. It’s rather fascinating that genuine German bread is nearly impossible to find on the far side of the world, yet, bizarrely, ultra-niche German pumpernickel is readily available. Don’t get me wrong, I truly love this quirky dark rye brick.
