JaakkoIt always surprises me how much open water you can find, even in the middle of -30°C temperatures. Somehow, these small streams stay open for long periods, even in extreme cold. JaakkoThis river crossing is from my solo hike in the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area last January. These always give me sweaty palms, especially when I'm hiking alone in the winter and dragging a heavy pulka, or in this case, two pulkas behind me. JaakkoThe Poroharju esker in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, Finland. I captured this photo during my six-week solo winter hike. Esker is a large and extensive formation made of sand and rocks, and is quite common in Finnish landscapes. BenOnce you're on the plateau it's a maze of small brooks, and deceptively large. Easy to get lost. In the far distance is Grindslow Knoll. Jim SchochMy son Aaron just finished and throughly enjoyed a 60 mile hike here in Az along the base of the Mogollon Rim. I dropped him off Tuesday morning about 9:30 am and picked him up about 9:30 am today (Friday) near Pine Az. Last year he hiked Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail as well as completing the Az Trail from Mexico to Utah border.
