Lindsay Brown
For non BCers, BC Hydro runs annoying ads hosted by "Dave" with conservation tips to keep your bill down so you don't get mad at Hydro when it applies to BCUC for huge rate hikes due to #SiteC. It's akin to when our Premier Horgan blamed youth for #covid19bc instead of looking to his own policies.."

Lindsay Brown
Engineer: "Why do we never consider that BC Hydro could put solar panels on your roof? They'd belong to BC Hydro & you wouldn't have to shell out. You only pay for their service. It's like the phone or cable co. technically owning your modem. This is FAR cheaper than the $20 billion #SiteC dam for both BC Hydro & us.."

Lindsay Brown
You probably have questions. I did. Let's go through all the Qs I instantly had for the engineer.

Q: Won't some people then be paying more? Esp. if they're conserving electricity & keeping their bills low?

A: Maybe, but not as much as if our current rates doubled due to #SiteC, which is possible. You could make payments progressive, too..

Lindsay Brown
The ability to export electricity depends on demand (which fluctuates by time of year, day etc). But just to give you an idea of how unprofitable exports are from, for example, BC's #SiteC dam:

It costs us over $125/MWhr to produce electricity with #SiteC. We can sell it - when we can even find a market for it - at about $25MWhr! Huge losses, and by the way the cost of that is largely borne by us, the ratepayers.

Lindsay Brown
Even when they're not building building pointless corporate welfare projects like the (corrupt) #SiteC dam, power utilities have big overhead costs. They must maintain dams, plants, wires, grid. With so much cheap renewable energy coming online, market price for electricity is low, & contrary to popular opinion we make little/zero from electricity exports now... We can't just "sell it to our neighbours to pay for it!"

Lindsay Brown
First, what's a "utility death spiral"?

Say an energy utility (eg BC Hydro) pointlessly spends too much on new generation (eg #SiteC dam) on top of the cost of maintaining all its wires and poles. It raises electricity rates to cover costs. As rates rise, consumers reduce their usage (and bills) +/or go off-grid. The utility's revenues fall. It raises rates to compensate, people use even less electricity... This market phenomenon is called elasticity and it will spark a death spiral.

Lindsay Brown
It's ostensibly a different problem, but the current electricity panic is reminiscent of the horse manure crisis for those of us opposing BC's unnecessary #SiteC dam.

One of the most troubling & persistent public misperceptions we face is the false idea of electricity scarcity:

"WE ARE GOING TO NEED A SHEDLOAD OF ELECTRICITY TO DECARBONIZE OURSELVES!! EVs ARE COMING! OH NO! BUILD MORE DAMS! MAYBE A REACTOR!"
