Steve McCarty 🇯🇵<p>I've just retired from 40 years in Japanese higher education. I'm happy, however, because I'm completely healthy. I think that was the only time where we were almost completely alone. It was early afternoon and the temperatures were rising, but still in managable regions in the mid-twenties. It was magical and utterly silent, because this pyramid is far awy from everything else and to me it felt as if it's already the middle of the desert. Sadly, we didn't have much time to soak up the atmosphere because we were on a tight schedule towards the next sight 😅<br>

Steve McCarty 🇯🇵<p>I've been taking care of our older son, who is in his mid-30s. You might think it would be the opposite with his old man, but this is Japan, and unconditional love can appear one-sided. He is an IT manager in Tōkyō and can work mostly from home, or from our home. Since he has been living in such an urban environment, I took him on a nice nature course in northern Kyōto City from Kitaōji along the Kamo River quite a distance north, to the great shrine Kamigamo Jinja, and then to the Kyōto Botanical Garden (京都北部の北大路駅↬鴨川沿い↬上賀茂神社↬京都府立植物園). JomesVisiting the pyramids and the sphinx on my first day in Egypt was amazing, but also gave me a taste of the endless amount of people we'd have to fight for some nice pictures in all further locations. It's the definition of mass tourism. Every inch of the paths was covered in people despite it being early in the morning off season. <br>

Steve McCarty 🇯🇵<p>Kitano Tenman-gū (北野天満宮) in northern Kyōto City is a major Shintō shrine combining national treasure architecture and plum blossom viewing at its best in these photos. Please enjoy the humor of the last one.</p><p>1) the torii gate to enter the sacred space. 2) Pink plum blossoms. 3) Mini-shrine to a kami god. 4) Caught in the act ... of sniffing plum blossom fragrance. fiona and marcOllantaytambo, a charming little village, is located around half an hour from Urubamba, further down in the Sacred Valley. This village is a tourist spot and well known because there is the main trainstation to Machu Picchu. <br>
We visited Ollantaytambo during our stay in Urubamba and loved strolling through the narrow cobblestone streets. Everywhere we met local people in their traditional clothing, sitting on the floor, making and selling handicraft items. Of course, there is also a very well-equipped and colorful artisanal market, from where we hade a wonderful view of the Andean peaks around, and from where we got a glimpse of the Inca ruins sticking in the green hills... <br>

fiona and marcAnother day, we traveled about 2 hours by colectivo bus and taxi to the entrance of the archaeological ruins site at an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters above Pisac.<br>

As soon as we arrived, it started raining, but we didn't let it bother us. We already knew that the rain in this valley doesn't linger in one place for long. And so it was. After just under half an hour, which we spent waiting under a roof with local artisans selling handicrafts, the rain had moved further down the valley. The sky didn't clear up entirely, but we could enjoy the site without another raindrop.<br>

The Inca Ruins are perched atop of a rocky mountain overlooking the Urubamba River valley. The strategic location of Pisac allowed the Incas to control access to the valley and protect vital trade routes. This impressive site was an important administrative and defensive center for the Inca Empire, with an expansive citadel, agricultural terraces, and sacred religious structures.<br>
One of the site's most significant structures is the Temple of the Sun, a sacred site dedicated to the Inca sun god Inti. The ruins also contain a series of ritual baths and ceremonial fountains, suggesting Pisac was an important religious center for the Inca civilization.<br>

On the mountains around Pisac and in the valley near the town, there are a huge number of Inca agricultural terraces that were used to cultivate a variety of Andean crops like potatoes, quinoa, and corn. And the really cool thing here is that these terraces are still in use by local farmers today, which makes so much sense because the hills are super steep and the Incas invented these terraces not for no reason...<br>
