..."#Obama stood firm on the idea that the way to reclaim #democracy is to build #coalitions around taking action on #issues that matter to the #American people without regard to personal #identities or #political affiliations. #Pluralism, Obama said, “is about recognizing that in a democracy, #power comes from forging #alliances, and building coalitions, and making room in those coalitions not only for the woke but also for the waking.”

And that, in many ways,’”...

Letters from an American · December 7, 2024By Heather Cox Richardson

The Creepy Weirdos™ arrived at the conclusion that they did not wish to live in a society which tolerated #pluralism back when Brown overturned Plessy.

Obama taught constitutional law and you’d think he would have internalized this reality by now.

But, no, just earnest platitudes at the close of the Year of Our Science 2024.

Hard to articulate how disappointing a figure this man has become.

Making a Judeo-Christian America: The Christian Right, Antisemitism, and the Politics of Religious Pluralism in the 20th Century United States
Andrew Warne, PhD Dissertation 2012

"accepting religious diversity through performative language allowed Americans not only to redefine their national identity, but also to articulate a range of moral and political claims in the name of the Judeo-Christian tradition."

Jews vs. the “Judeo-Christian Tradition”
Livia Gershon for JSTOR Daily, 2024

"while the idea of a Judeo-Christian tradition was originally used to combat antisemitism, it can also be weaponized against other worldviews."

"religion scholar Shalom Goldman has argued that the term has become 'a cover for an attack on the values of the Enlightenment; the very values that enabled Jews to enter Western societies.'"

Pluralism in Multicultural Liberal Democracy and the Justification of Female Circumcision
S. K. Hellsten, J. Applied Philosophy 1999

"One does not realise what is best in oneself if social pressures to conform to custom lead one mindlessly along or when one is not given a choice in the first place, either `because of being kept in ignorance or because of being terrorised by the wielders of bayonets'."

So many people, intra- and inter-community struggle with accepting that people will have different perspectives, values, and priorities, and that they're all equally valid.

My friend wrote this great piece on how intracommunal fueds and identities are formed and determined to be "the" community perspective. The corollary, of course, is that all of them are real and valid and do not represent everybody. Members of a community do not need to fall in behind the essentialized perspective.

Pluralism means all are.
