TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>The one-day old crescent moon and the Pleiades in evening twilight as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico.</p><p>Each photo is about ten minutes later than the previous one. As twilight fades, the saturated sky colors soften and more stars become visible. </p><p>I chose to frame each shot so that the horizon was visible. I like the earthly context it adds, and in the final shot, with the moon getting close to the horizon...I was able to include the lights of La Luz.</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/NewMexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewMexico</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Moon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Moon</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Pleiades" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pleiades</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Astrophotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astrophotography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Twilight" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Twilight</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Evening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Evening</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a></p>

Technically, this means that the orbit of our Moon takes it directly in front of the famous Pleiades star cluster, which is far in the distance. The technical term for the event is an occultation, and the Moon is famous for its rare occultations of all planets and several well-known bright stars. </p><p>Image Credit: Cayetana Saiz</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/astrophotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>astrophotography</span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Moon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Moon</span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Pleiades" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pleiades</span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/occultation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>occultation</span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/APOD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>APOD</span></a></p>

Joe Heafner<p>Psst! See Moon tonight? It's next to the famous Pleiades cluster. This only happens every 18-19 years and coincides with major lunar standstills (aka lunistices). The current series of passes near, and sometimes over, the Pleiades began last year and will last till 2029. Get outside and take a look! <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Moon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Moon</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Pleiades" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pleiades</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/LCTTA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LCTTA</span></a></p><p><a href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/watch-the-moon-occult-the-pleiades-spica-too/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-</span><span class="invisible">news/observing-news/watch-the-moon-occult-the-pleiades-spica-too/</span></a></p>
TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Tonight's post and image are a continuation of last night's post:<br><a href="https://universeodon.com/@KrajciTom/113739815995436360" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">universeodon.com/@KrajciTom/11</span><span class="invisible">3739815995436360</span></a></p><p>(Winter milky way in Taurus - network of dark dust clouds. (85mm, f/1.4. Sony a6300.))</p><p>Tonight's image is monochrome/black &amp; white because it's near infrared. (The filter is 670 nanometer long pass, which is very deep visible red (redder/longer than hydrogen alpha at 656 nm) and longer wavelengths, but my camera's sensitivity drops off and eventually ends at around 1050 nm)</p><p>Compare it to last night's color image. The infrared image can see deeper into some of the dusty areas that look quite dark in visible light.</p><p>Note that the infrared image is less sharp. The stars are bigger/fuzzier. That's because of chromatic aberration. This camera lens was designed to work well with visible light. It's performance in IR is noticeably poorer.</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/NewMexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewMexico</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/MilkyWay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MilkyWay</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Astrophotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astrophotography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Taurus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Taurus</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Perseus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Perseus</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Auriga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Auriga</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Jupiter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jupiter</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Pleiades" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pleiades</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Dust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dust</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Infrared" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Infrared</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Monochrome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Monochrome</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/BnW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BnW</span></a></p>
Dr Megan Argo<p>Lovely sky right now, feels like we haven’t seen many stars lately. If you’re in the UK and <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/LookUp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LookUp</span></a> right now, you’ll see the <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Pleiades" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pleiades</span></a> and <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Hyades" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hyades</span></a> clusters, the bright stars <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Capella" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Capella</span></a>, <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Aldebaran" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Aldebaran</span></a> and <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Betelgeuse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Betelgeuse</span></a> (no, it hasn’t exploded yet), as well as <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Jupiter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jupiter</span></a>.
