Mic Pin
Dite la verità: l'estate è noiosa. Troppo caldo per fare qualunque attività. Le ore in spiaggia sono vuote e noiose. iliazeus
A question for #OpenStreetMap people.

I am traveling abroad in a couple weeks, and I plan to rely on OSM (via OsmAnd on my phone) for navigation. The place where I'm planning to go doesn't have its bus routes on OSM though, which is a pain, since I plan on mostly using public transport. I have managed to find on the interned several bus route maps; however, they are not laid out on an actual street map, instead just depicting the routes, stops, and a couple landmarks - like subway maps often do, basically. This makes them very hard to use for me, since I have no idea where all the stops are actually located.

I have zero experience working with OSM, or with any map-editing software, though.

Another issue is that I don't speak the language of that country. The place I'm going to visit is pretty touristy, so I expect to get by with my English. However, at least some of the more "newbie-oriented" OSM editors (like this one, for example) seem to default to rendering the map in the "native" language for that place. And that language uses a non-Latin writing system that I don't know and have no way of even inputting currently.

Considering all these limitations, what would be the easiest way to add those bus routes on the map?

If everything fails, I don't mind paying some money for a more experienced person to just do it for me. But I really want to try it myself first, though.

I also don't even really mind just having a way to have them displayed locally in OsmAnd, if adding them to the actual OSM data will not be possible.

(boosts appreciated!)

#OSM #maps

contrapunctus ✊🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
At least one co-organizer has repeatedly expressed that they would prefer to say “mapping meetup” rather than “mapping party”…but “mapping meetup” has always sounded a little too “exclusive” and too socializing-focused to me…

Another option was “mapathon”. In the past I thought it would sound tiring or time-consuming, but perhaps it can express the thrill of sustained collective activity instead?

Also thought of some new terms - “MapWalk”, and “MapStroll”…the former was well-received, so we’ll try using “MapWalk” in the future.

We’re also toying with the idea of a bicycle-oriented event, and “MapWalk” could be changed to “MapCycle” for that.

#OpenStreetMap #OSM #contraMaps

contrapunctus ✊🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
Even on the night before the party, we were agonizing over the perpetual question - what editor to teach to newcomers?

And after the workshop and the latest mapping party, I think I have a new and improved idea.

We always introduce #CoMaps (and earlier Organic Maps) to newcomers, focusing on it as a means of using OSM. But we avoid using its editor - offline data can be confusing and (in the presence of concurrent editors) can more easily lead to duplication.

But if we want people to recommend CoMaps to other, less technical people…they may want the latter to be able to add places without installing another app.

I have long admired StreetComplete’s gamified interface, but always figured that it would cause issues in a mapping party.

But perhaps we can incorporate it after all? The people it is most likely to cause issues for are the #Vespucci users, and they are experienced enough (and Vespucci’s tooling is good enough) to handle upload conflicts.

Another issue is that if a user adds some data using a #StreetComplete layer, it takes time for quests to appear for it.

#MapComplete is good because it puts together the things people coming from Google Maps often expect from OSM - map data, photos, and ratings+reviews. The questions and the photo-taking may also add some variety and fun, and the photos also help other mappers verify the data and add details.

So here’s the new idea -

We practice adding 1-3 POIs with CoMaps. There may be duplication, but that’s okay, we (the organizers) will clean it up later as we usually do.

Then, we add 5-10 POIs with MapComplete.

Finally, we try out StreetComplete to add more details to the streets and POIs. We will use SC’s team mode to divide quests between people on the same team.

I’ll test the viability of this process soon.

(Vespucci will go back to being an editor for regular participants.)

#OpenStreetMap #OSM #contraMaps
