Forcing cloud, always online, subscription models have taken most of technology away from user and tied it to a company with umbilical cord.
Company can change pricing (Adobe), TOS (Unity), have server crash (Sony), or use your personal or professional data to push you out of market few years in the future.
I love offline, I love penguin and FOSS. It makes me love tech again.
The biggest difference between the online gaming network outages of a decade plus ago and today's issues is that most games now require a subscription in order to play these games even if it's offline due to massive #DRM.
It's one of the main reasons why I stepped back from console gaming over the last few years and focusing more on PC and retro/historical gaming.

I really liked the argument that we're now so much more connected to our family (constant texting) and also to the larger world (social media), but less connected to our local community. It would be great to solve this IRL but maybe in the same way that tech has helped with the other two, we could also solve that middle kind of disconnection. Palms were offline devices that only synced with your computer when put on a docking station.

Hey assembled smart people... I learned a while back that you can download backups of the entire wikipedia dataset and it weighs in at about 86GB... Recent events have made me start thinking about that again and wondering, is there an app for android phones to work with datasets like that? 86GB is a lot of data, but it's easy to get SD cards big enough to hold it, and it might be nifty/useful to have all of wikipedia sitting on your phone and readable.
