autumnleaves<p>Sunday evening, gardening done. Way too many to eat all at once. Undoubtedly lots of blanching and freezing. <a href="https://jazztodon.com/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://jazztodon.com/tags/growyourown" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>growyourown</span></a> <a href="https://jazztodon.com/tags/vegetables" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vegetables</span></a></p>
icastico<p>À <a href="https://c.im/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> comment. Reading two book at the same time chosen without any plan to compare them. One - “Dawn” by Octavia Butler, the other “The Half Built Garden” by Ruthanna Emrys. They turn out to have the exact same overarching plot - advanced aliens coming upon Earth and trying to save humans from à self-inflicted disaster. What is striking is how differently the two authors approach the theme of alienness and control. So many shared conflicts and themes between the books, but they couldn’t be handled more differently. Fascinating. </p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/OctaviaButler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OctaviaButler</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/scifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>scifi</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>reading</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/NowReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NowReading</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a></p>

Dave Mandl<p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NowReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NowReading</span></a> Stacey Levine, "Mice 1961." All these fancy words ("syntactical dazzlements," "measured drollery"), and I have to confess I bought it because I love the cover photo (a still from the 1961 Vera Chytilová film "Strop," according to the acknowledgments).</p>

Dave Mandl<p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NowReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NowReading</span></a> Jennifer Caplan, "Funny, You Don't Look Funny." I'm about to take a trip involving a long train ride, and I was panicking because I don't have a book to read. Then I remembered this. I bought it based on an excellent talk on Jewishness on TV given by the author at YIVO a few months ago.</p>
the baywindowgirl<p>I’m very much enjoying the audiobook of this - A Bitter Remedy by Alis Hawkins. The lead character is Welsh, and I was initially cautious after my experience with the pronunciation of Niamh as NeeAm in a previous title. However, the readers are called Ffion and Iestyn, so all is well. Also, our working class heroine uses her knowledge of Welsh to break a cipher, thus outwitting a load of braying Oxford types.<br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NowReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NowReading</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <br><a href="https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/37fba0ce-cf70-4bd8-b0d1-558e9d04aca2/editions" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">app.thestorygraph.com/books/37</span><span class="invisible">fba0ce-cf70-4bd8-b0d1-558e9d04aca2/editions</span></a></p>
