Hari Tulsidas<p>New studies have revealed that ancient viruses, which became a part of the DNA of jawed vertebrates, played a vital role in the development of myelin. Myelin allows for swift impulse conduction without the need to increase the diameter of nerve cells. This made it possible for nerves to be packed together more closely and grow longer, which was beneficial for both larger body sizes and more complex brains.</p><p><a href="https://masto.ai/tags/Myelin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Myelin</span></a> <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/Virus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Virus</span></a> <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/Nerves" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nerves</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.sciencenews.org/article/ancient-retrovirus-myelin-speedy-nerves-evolve" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">sciencenews.org/article/ancien</span><span class="invisible">t-retrovirus-myelin-speedy-nerves-evolve</span></a></p>

Petri Kursula<p>So time for that <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a> I suppose. I'm a structural biologist mainly working on the <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/myelin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>myelin</span></a> sheath molecules, which include membrane <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/proteins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>proteins</span></a> as well as disordered molecules. We use various tools of <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/structuralbiology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>structuralbiology</span></a>, including <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/crystallography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>crystallography</span></a>, <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/cryoem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cryoem</span></a>, and <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/biophysics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biophysics</span></a>. Not sure yet, how much work-related posting will happen here (I feel too old for this platform), but at least you will get to see some <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/photos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photos</span></a> of <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/norway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>norway</span></a> and <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/dogs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dogs</span></a>.</p>
